The rest of my vacation was good. I got along well with everyone, and I never really felt inadequate, as I can easily do around my family. I met my nephew, my brother's son, for the first time. He's an adorable chubby 8-month-old who is obsessed with walking. He would get so frustrated that he couldn't walk yet. My five-year-old second cousins, twin boys, are, on the other hand, loud and aggressive. I found them difficult to be around. Thankfully I was able to stay at my other cousin's house where there are cats but no children and it is quiet.
I like Raleigh, where they live. It's in the foothills of the Appalachians and so it feels more like home. I really miss vertical relief here central Ohio. As always when I visit there, I start thinking about moving down there. But then I have a bad case of wanderlust in general. It didn't help that the weather was warm during my visit--almost 70 degrees on Thursday.
Because I extended my travel plans to stay for the funeral on Friday, I wasn't able to get a flight out until Tuesday because all of the planes were full. The rest of the visiting family left on Friday right after the funeral. I spent the weekend studying during the days, and then going out with my cousins and their SO's in the evenings for dinner and movies.
We saw lots of movies:
Finding Nemo: well done, I guess, but I found it scary and too, I don't know...linear?.... I was glad when it was over.
Sideways: An independent movie about a trip two middle-aged men take in California wine country the week before one of them gets married. Very much a guy movie. Very funny in places, but between the laughs I was bored. If I were more into wine I would have liked it better.
Shawshank Redemption: Wow!! Brilliant in every way. Morgan Freeman's finest hour.
The Royal Tenenbaums: I guess I just don't get Wes Anderson. I thought it was kinda funny, but too stylized. Like a modern painting. And now I can barely remember what happened. I'm not cool enough for it I guess.
American Splendor: Very good. Really good. I like the unconventionality of using the drawings, actors, and real people. Human and engaging.
Galaxy Quest: I made my (trekker) cousin watch this. He said it "wasn't bad", and laughed at the funny bits. I quoted lines. "I have one job on this lousy ship. It's stupid, but I'm doing it!"
Yeah, it was a good visit. But a week staying in someone else's home is a bit too long. I was happy to get home to my kitties and my own space.
