State of Emergency

Dec 14, 2008 13:16

We lost power Thursday night and it still isn't up. It was very cold in the house until Ann's parents arrived with a generator from LI. We have had heat for more than a day now (when we're running the generator) and we now have cable. There are electrical crews from Ohio and all over the place here. It's impressive.

The house got hit by a tree, which we had to chainsaw and pull down (again thanks to Ann's parents). It was a pretty spooky night during the storm. I probably can't explain the sounds that the trees were making. It was a cracking and twisting followed by the sound of the falling limb. The most impressive aspect was the frequency. It wasn't an occasional thing. It was every minute and a half to two minutes for hours. Very few trees around here still have their top. I mean, really, without any winds all the trees and been damaged.

There were trees and power lines down across our driveway.

When we were able to get out we had to drive an hour to get to stores which weren't being hammered by our neighbors.

It's been an experience. I'm hoping we'll have utility electric tonight.

Thanks to everyone here who offered us a place to stay. You are all nice people.
