This is the inroduction to the book I'm attempting to write before Jaden turns 5. Just wanted some feedback on what you all thought of it.
Enjoy!
Darkness.
The void adults ignore and enjoy in their sleepy- time splendor. Children shut their eyes tight in fear, afraid of what is lurking the corners of their rooms, until the Sandman makes them forget all and they slip away in slumber.
What we do not see does not hurt us. Ignorance is bliss. Who’s right, who’s wrong, the adult, or the child?
Throughout written history, civilizations have recorded grandeur tales of battles between the forces of light and dark, tales of mighty warriors, smiting demonic forces that lurk in the shadows. These tales are still around today, but in the forms of books, music, cinema and art. Have they helped us cope with our fears or have they numbed us?
Innocence.
This is what we adults have lost and this is what they feed upon. Yes, the things that go “bump in the night” are very real, but once a person’s innocence is lost we can no longer see them. They have done their job, corrupted and tarnished the psyche of the human mind. They have taken away our innocence. They have taken away the one special gift a human holds dear when they are young; the gift to make us believe a stick can be Excalibur and they are Arthur, to imagine a box is a car one moment and a house the next.
This is what Nightmares feed upon, and there is nothing that can protect us from it.
Or is there something that does protect us, and we are not aware of it?
Think back to when you were a child. Remember that special item that you adored above anything else? Whether it was a blanket, a pillow, or a toy; there was always one relic you held above all others. That one relic you dragged everywhere you went, that could protect you from the monsters at night, and it was your shield, your sword, your armor.
Remember how it got all dirty and destroyed, because you “loved” it so much? Your parents would want to throw it in the trash, but you insisted that it be cleaned and fixed- so it never left your side.
The innocence in a child is a very special and magical thing; when a child breathes there first love into an item and gives it a name, it does come to life. It’s this love that gives that relic the duty to defend you at night. They do not get dirty or torn from you rolling them through the mud or catching them on a nail. Those stains and tears are true to life battle scars from them protecting you at night while your eyes were closed.
No matter how much you believe this to be true- one can never maintain their innocence forever; and would you want to? Your innocence is what the nightmares feed upon and makes them very real, and very visible to the eyes. As we grow older our innocence slips away normally to protect us from the mental tortures of the world; imagine seeing a nightmare walking next to you on the city streets? The nightmares are there always, but cannot touch us. We do not have that special privilege as a child; we see it all and experience it all and the nightmares take full advantage of this.
This is why we have our plush, plastic or fabric guardians of the night. We may forget them as we grow older, but they never forget us.
This is why this is being written down; just like the great tales of the past. This is one fable that needs to be remembered. This is a tale of true courage and true love; between a little girl and a bean bag bunny, named Nny.
