Let the commencement...begin!

May 15, 2005 17:40

It's been a long weekend. Today was the big commencement ceremony for the class of 2005 at SUNY Albany. Yesterday was the departmental recognition ceremonies. I decided that I did not want to go to the Sociology recognition ceremony because I really didn't get to know any of my professors in that department. Also, I had to work. The East Asian Studies recognition ceremony was phenomenal. Since it is a small department, the professors stood up and said something about each individual graduate. You wouldn't get that kind of thing in a larger department. It was pretty fun and reminded of why I really enjoyed being a part of the East Asian Studies department and why I decided to be a Japanese major.

The commencement ceremony was fun, as well. Though it rained, it felt good to be part of a huge ceremony and celebrate haivng finally freed myself from the responsibilities of academia. The new U Albany President, Kermit Hall, gave a humorous speech and now I have 76 dollars worth of regallia to remember it by.

I'd like to thanks everyone that came to celebrate the graduates (as if anyone actually reads this) even if you weren't there to support me. My mother came and Steve came. They are probably the two most important people in my life. Surprisingly, my father came up with his mother, daughter, his girlfriend and her daughter. I suppose that wa good as well, though I wouldn't have cared either way. I've got nothing against him, but I hadn't known him for the first 18 years of my life and it's far too late for me to start caring now, hehe. My mother suggests though that I use my grandmother for a free trip to Trinidad. This is a prime example of why my mother is the greatest mother in the world. Trinidad, here I come!

Well, I leave Albany in one week (next Saturday) to head back to Syracuse and then back to Japan for God knows how long. Feel free to stop by or call me and say your goodbyes. If not, fuck you! I never liked you anyways.
