why you should all go see Transformers

A good action movie consists of three essential elements:

1. A threat that the protagonists must overcome (or plot)
2. Explosions
3. A happy ending.

Transformers adds a fourth: GIANT ROBOTS FROM SPACE.

Aside from being an orgasm of terrific special effects, Transformers is actually very good. At first I thought it was because I'm a big fan of the old cartoon show, but the movies really do stand on their own. There were parts that had clever banter, and you know, character development. But I found myself wishing that they'd stop with the character development and get back to the explosions and shit.

The movie has a really cool tempo to it - there are moments of calm, clever dialogue, followed by bursts of glorious metal-on-metal CGI violence. Then it calms down again. It's like a rollercoaster that lasts for two hours. Except that in the end you're not nauseous and annoyed.

Megan Fox's character (the hot girlfriend) is ... I don't know. I've always felt she was a little out of place in the movie. It feels like she was shoehorned into the story to give it some sexual tension. She has to be into cars, engines, and motorcycles for her to fit into a story about giant alien robots from space. Otherwise she's just screen candy. It irritates me. Mostly because she really could be the protagonist instead of Sam, but the fanboys would scream bloody murder for killing off Sam.

They didn't kill the black robots this time though.

So to sum up. Transformers is a series of explosions set to a plot that has an ambiguously happy ending with room for a third installment. Maybe in the third one, Starscream will finally sound out the Decepticon retreat.

Decepticons! Retreat! RETREAT!

See it:

1. There's a teaser in it for the Avatar movie that gave me hope.
