Hokai, so, here's the earth.
Actually, here's a somewhat-promised LJ entry about
Red Dog Venue by Bella-Roi. Last time we knew, I had not yet caught up with the storyline. Now that I have, I'm adding some new impressions to the ones I posted
here.
I won't get spoiler-iffic about this, or I'll try not to, so please forgive vague language.
Where I last left off in RDV, Phase 2 had just finished and Phase 3 hadn't started, so this continued review applies to what there is so far of Phase 3. The "action" of the story starts up again, introducing some foes for Noel (and somewhat for Connor, too), but here's where my one complaint comes in: trouble seems to be disposed of too quickly for my taste. The fight sequences felt a little rushed, whereas in the past, the author gave us panel upon panel of delightful gory detail without bogging the story down. In this case, she went the total opposite direction and it didn't work as well. That, and the characters she introduced had interesting designs, so I would've liked to see more of them, if only a few extra panels here or there.
On the positive side - and it's overwhelmingly more positive, don't worry - the relationship between Connor and Noel continues to develop at a realistic pace, and more hints about both their pasts are dropped. Not enough to package everything neatly and simplistically, but enough to get me curious and to keep me involved. What we see of Noel is pretty gripping, I gotta say. And the way Connor reacts as well as the way he plays off Noel makes me want to see how these two will work through their differences. That kind of thing is always awesome because I can't stand when characters resolve an issue quickly and it's never brought up again, or it comes up but only to add mindless angst to the story. That won't be the case here and I can tell. What angst there is is legitimate, and what troubles there are between Noel and Connor won't miraculously go away.
So although some things went too fast, other things - the foundation on which the comic is built, really, which is the main characters - are scooting along beautifully. I'm pleased with that.
And the art is still great! So is the dialogue, while I'm thinking about it. Connor makes me smirk with his obsession with his appearance as well as his willingness to cheat and lie - being sarcastic the whole time, of course.
I'm still saying y'all should go read it! ^_^
"Art has two constant, two unending concerns: It always meditates on death and thus always creates life."
