First of all--before I post an entry, I am going to post some lyrics to whatever song is invading my brain. Today it is a couple of songs and I want to just put a taste of what strikes me about them in this entry.
The first one is "Oh Sister" by Bob Dylan: "Oh, sister, am I not a brother to you/ And one deserving of affection? /And is our purpose not the same on this earth/To love and follow His direction?"
This is in my head courtesy of a guy who also invades my headspace. I currently find it extremely annoying. It's bordering on irritating me. It's from Dylan's spectacular album "Desire." It has the perfect amount of smokey gypsy to it. Emmylou Harris's vocals on it add to the heartbreak felt by the narrator. You can hear and feel the desperation in the song. It's only one of several songs that will hit you to the core. 70s Dylan blows my mind.
The other one is "Let Your Troubles Roll By" by Carbon Leaf: "Like a culture vulture sprawled out on the floor/Like a dead devil soldier washed up on the shore/With nothing of note but the ole' Capt.'s coat/And a burning boat you just sank with your salty tears."
This is in my head because a good friend of mine introduced me to lastfm and I created playlists and and this is what came up on my Guster radio station. Carbon Leaf is bluegrass-celtic-rock and I'm really digging it. It has a good message, and the lyrics are amazing. Culture vulture? That's brilliant, not only for the way it sounds when being said, or even the poetry of it. The connotation one gets from it is interesting. You can read into it in several ways. One-culture feeds upon people. Two-people who are obsessed with everything in today's culture are like birds of prey. I won't go into deeper analysis, it's already obvious I'm missing being in class.
