Those words still remain with me. One of the few things that I have remembered from past concerts. It came from Raine Maida, after climbing back onstage. Some guy grabbed Raine's foot and he didn't know, when he turned around to get back onto the stage from the security column, the person was still holding on and Raine fell into the crowd.
I bought Our Lady Peace's new album "Healthy In Paranoid Times" and I am thoroughly impressed. Album after album they continue to amaze me. This album, surpisingly, tops them. That's not to say the other albums are bad. Far from it, they are all great in my opinion. This album, however, has a wide variety of rhythms.
Let's look at the songs one by one, shall we?
1. "Angels/Losing/Sleep":
"It’s like the calm before the storm, you better swim
Just like it’s cold before it’s warm, you’ll get back here again"
This is one of the songs on this cd that has a U2-like style to it. It still holds some of OLP's old style in it but shares it with the U2 style. This song is very calming and soothing. This is a great song to start off the new album with.
2. "Will The Future Blame Us":
" And is it getting better, can we live forever
I’m not sure what the hell we’re fighting for
Does the money make us, and will the future blame us
Oh I don’t wanna know"
This song holds a lot of Our Lady Peace's older styles all meshed into one kickin' style. It has their fast paced tempos mixed with a few parts with slower rhythms. This song seems to be about the war and what it may do to our future. Another great song.
3. "Picture":
"I’m waiting by the telephone, breathing through a giant rubber hose
God only knows
Photographs of you and me, pictures of the friends you used to know
Where did they go?"
I was reminded of "Blister" from the Happiness cd when I first heard this song. I figure it may just be the word "waiting" at the beginning. They have different tones and everything so it really wasn't anything musically that caused this memory. Lyrically it's a sad song, but just listening to the song for the way the music flows, it's an uplifting song.
4. "Where Are You":
"Hey you, have you felt like this before
You’ve got style but ain’t got soul
Are you happy now, are you happy
Tonight, did punk rock get it right
Is there no future in sight
Is it different now, is it different"
Another of the U2 sounding songs. I like this song a lot. It even has the drumstick tapping at the beginning, letting you know that it will indeed rock.
5. "Wipe That Smile Off Your Face"
"It's just the two of us, a silver cross
And some strength that you won't believe
You see I'm not your friend, and I won't pretend
That I've come here for peace
Well I'm not afraid, I'm gonna make you pay
I'm gonna wipe that smile off your face"
This song reminds me of the final episode of Hellsing. When Alucard is facing Incognito. Incognito is grinning because he thinks that fusing himself with Seto will give him the power to destroy Alucard once and for all. This song has an interesting style to it. It even has that faceoff feeling to it. I like this song a lot.
6. "Love And Trust"
" Will you break my fall
When i climb to high
I always lose my nerve
It happens every time
Will you bring me home
When I’m barely alive
It’s the state of love and trust
This is for you, this is for you"
A faster paced and unique song. Considering that most of the cd's songs are at a slower pace, this is a good change. Not that the slower pace is bad, but variety is good.
7. "Boy"
"It’s time for forgiveness
It’s time for relief
It’s time that we’ve wasted
It’s time that we need
It’s time for decision
It’s time to be brave
It’s the time of your life
Don’t let it slip away"
Starts out with an earlier OLP style and then the chorus is in the U2 style. A pretty good song and a good demonstration of style mixing.
8. "Apology"
"You, you’re me
I’m a lock, you’re the key
You’re the air I breathe
But tonight I’m choking"
This has a sort of medium pace to it. The part where he says "I'm a liar, a thief" reminds me of Made to Heal from the Spiritual Machines cd. The song slows down at parts and then picks up. It's an alright song. I don't hate it, but it's not one of the better songs. It's almost like the title was picked for a reason.
9. "The World On A String"
"I see the world on a string
It’s hanging from a wire
It gets tangled up and spun around
Like the truth inside a liar
Sometimes you wanna get high
Sometimes you run and hide
It eats you up and spits you out
It swallows you alive"
I like this song. It's got a weird Muppet Show feeling behind it. I'm not really sure how to explain this song. Probably one of my favorites from this cd, though.
10. "Don't Stop"
"Don’t stop sucking me in
Making me come back to you
No one will ever compare
Will ever be better than you"
I like this song a lot and the lines "No one will ever compare, Will ever be better than you" makes me think of Fran. When I first heard the chorus, I couldn't help but think about how true those lines are. Nobody will ever compare to Fran and I'm happy that she loves me too.
11. "Walking In Circles"
"It’s a feeling that you know
A feeling that explodes
A feeling you want more
And more and more and more"
A very fast paced song. For some reason it reminds me of a HIM song, but I'm not really sure why. I like this song.
12. "Al Genina (Leave The Light On)"
"I fell asleep today, in North Ontario
Woke up far away, In a place I didn’t know
A woman smiled at me, She said welcome to my home
Life is different here she said, it’s not camouflaged with gold"
This song is fairly short. It has a nice fadeout at the end, giving the cd a perfect ending. The "North Ontario" bit kinda made me laugh. The intro makes me think of "I, The Throw Away by Matthew Good Band. I like this song and I think it was a great song to chose to end the cd.
According to their cd booklet, they recorded 43 songs. I think the 12 they chose were good choices.
Well, that's it for now.
