last week of maintenance

Alex is staying for 2 weeks with us because he can't move into his apartment yet. It's been cool hanging out with him.

Monday: worked 7-5:30. I don't really remember what I did after work, probably nothing really.

Tuesday: worked 7-7, went to best buy with alex to pick up sin city and simpsons season 6. We watched Sin City, then went to bed.

Wednesday: worked 7-5:30, came back and showered and ate dinner, then me and Alex went over to Kevin's apartment to check it out, then the three of us went to the mall because I had to pick up Sonic Gems, then we went to Meijer to get stuff.

Thursday: worked 7-7 again. We had a conference thing, so I was in the caf for more than half the day working as dish lead. After work me and Alex went to Meijer to get beer. I was carrying a case of Corona by the cardboard handle thing and was walking by the food court, and it tore and fell in the middle of the floor. The beer foamed up and created quite a mess for them to clean up. I was laughing the entire time walking back to the beer area to get another case. We watched some Simpsons then went to bed.

Friday: worked 7-5:30. I worked 53 hours in 5 days, not including meals, which is the most I've ever worked in a week (recorded hours that is, who knows how many I worked for Colorworks). I ended up going to bed pretty early for a friday night, around 12:30 I think.

Saturday: I slept in for a bit, then went to work from 12-3. Then I came back, showered, got some taco bell, and drove home. Oma came over to visit me, and then after she left, I taught Matti how to drive manual for over an hour; he got the hang of it pretty quickly. No more car here for me. :( Shantanu picked me up late in the evening and we came back to the apartment.

Sunday: slept in 1, played some sonic r, sat around in my room, finished watching steamboy, went to white castle and got a crave case with alex, brought it back here and ate it while watching simpsons and drinking beer for a few hours. It's pretty sweet when you're just sitting there and it requires massive amounts of effort to lift your head. This week's gonna rule.

It's been a great summer, probably the best I've ever had. I've made some really good friends. Not friends that I only associated with during the work hours, but ones that I'll keep in contact with for quite a while I'm sure. We're going to try and have our special projects crew get together maybe once a week and play poker which'll be cool. I kind of already miss the McDonel family (our floor), but apartment life is definitely awesome. I'm glad that I finally got to experience what it's like to have a floor that comes together though, and where everyone gets along and hangs out; it was not like that any of the three years on 6 east holmes. Working on special projects is something that I'll also miss. Those guys were awesome to work with, and all of us agreed that we were on the best crew there. Hopefully this school year will be good. I already scheduled my hours for work, and between that and classes, I probably won't have much free time at all except on weekends.

I don't think I wrote about this yet, but I got accepted into the business college earlier in the summer, so I need to finally commit to a major and stick with it until the end. This crap has been on my mind (in my opinion too much) lately, and hopefully I can figure it out within a couple more days. Here are the majors that I've been debating over since I first came to MSU:

Computer Engineering: I scratched this a long time ago when I realized that I wasn't able to put forth the effort required to successfully get through this major. It would've been cool because I enjoy working with computers, but I figure that it's better off as a hobby rather than a full-time career. I just wasn't motivated enough to do well.

Accounting: I was really considering this for quite a long time, but my parents are strongly against me going into this field, primarily because my dad is a CPA, and he hates his job. I thought about it a lot, and I think that they're right. I don't think I'm the right person to be sitting in front of a computer crunching numbers for the rest of my life. I need more interaction with, I dunno, anything. Sure the money's great (#1 in demand job right now is accounting), but I've realized over the past couple of years that money isn't everything. As long as I make enough to have a decent home and am able to pay my bills, happiness is what's more important.

Hospitality Business: I originally completely shoved this major aside because I had a friend that was pursuing a career in this field, and he was not the greatest, cleanest, articulate student in the world, but I guess that's probably why he almost didn't graduate (ie, GPA >2.0). I'm not a big fan of the food industry, so I'd definitely lean towards the hotel management side of the field. It would take a few years (at least) to work my way up to a position like that, but I guess it's like that with any job. Being able to interact with people on a daily basis and have control over a huge place like that would be sweet. We'll see.

Marketing: I don't know a whole lot about marketing, but I do know that it's important and that the money's decent. The fact that your job is to "sell a product" doesn't appeal to me too much because I'd rather not scam someone into buying some stupid shit. I'm not so sure about this anymore...

Zoology: This is something that I had looked into last year, but the fact that I'd need to get through Orgo 1 and 2 turned me off because I hate chemistry. The other courses wouldn't have been bad, but I was also informed by an adisvor that I probably wouldn't find a job without going to graudate school. This is pretty common with science majors, and I know a number of people that are struggling to find jobs. That sucks ass because they've worked their asses off for their degree and are now basically screwed. I can't say I love animals that much to sacrifice everything.

I just want to be happy, and I know that a huge percentage of the work force hates their job. The economy is so shitty right now, especially in Michigan, and I don't want to have to worry about being able to find a job after graduating. I'll have to meet with my advisors one last time before I come to my final decision. I guess it's not THAT big of a deal, but I'd still like to think about it for a few more days.
