Interesting article at the Design Observer about the 2005 National Design Awards, and some recipents refusing to go to the gala on political grounds. I find this kind of backwards though. While I do beleive it to be an interesting form of protest, I think refusing the award would say more. In this case it feels like these people/companies want to make a statement but don't want to give up the goods, so to speak. I think it would have been stronger had they gone to the Gala, refused the award, or used their speach to comment in person what was going on.
