... and they have just Proven how clueless they are - again.
As CBC.ca reported in
this story, the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) has ordered that more land or “greenfield space” be set aside for developers. This is so said developers may create yet more urban sprawl, farther and farther from this city’s center.
In an era of
Peak Oil and consequent soaring costs of commuting and travel, just how is that supposed to make sense? We should be discouraging and preventing any further expansion of the growth boundary. Indeed, we should be putting restrictions that forbid any further development of unused “greenfield space” at all.
This is no longer an issue just affecting some cities. This is now a province-wide issue. We, the people of Ontario, have a provincial election coming up on
6 October. If we are to put a stop to stupidity by the OMB (which belongs to the provincial government) and restore some reason to issues such as municipal zoning law, we need to apply pressure at the provincial level.
Remember that the clock is ticking. Sooner, rather than later, the cost of crude oil will soar and prices of $10/liter - or more! - for gasoline will become commonplace. What price will we be paying for suburbia then?
[That isn’t even considering the heaviest cost we pay for suburbia now: over 3000 people killed in Canada Each And Every Year, along with another 35000 or more killed Each and Every Year in the USA. If I didn’t know better, I would say that suburbanites have a death wish, so dependent are they on cars. But I repeat myself.]
What do others think? As always, this inquiring person would like to know.
