Come one, come all to the Ottawa Spring House-filk, located near Bayshore Mall and just off Carling Avenue in the West End of the City. The house-filk will be on this coming Saturday, May 23, starting at 2 pm in the afternoon and with the aim of continuing till well into the evening.
What is “filk,” you ask? Think of it as a form of folk music with Science Fiction and Fantasy themes. In the words of someone named
Leslie Fish, who has been singing it for years, filk is “folk songs for folk who ain’t been born yet.” Folk songs are also sometimes heard, but the main emphasis will be on songs related to both SF & Fantasy media and books.
While we would appreciate if you brought your voice and (preferably) a chair, a musical instrument is not required; most people may be bringing a guitar and some people will bring other music-making items. However, the main aim will be to have a good time, not to sound like a choir. As it has been noted elsewhere, filkers usually sing in the key of “off.” :-)
To get to the destination, please call 613-276-2342 for directions. The easiest way is to park one’s car somewhere else and approach by taking the Route 85 bus along Carling, preferably from the East via Lincoln Fields transitway station. [You can also approach from the opposite direction, via Route 85 from Bayshore Mall, but you will then have to get off and cross Carling Avenue to get to the destination, which is awkward and may be risky.]
I hope anyone who likes singing will be coming!
