He's doing great

So more details on the surgery today:

He went in around 6:45 but surgery did not start until shortly after 9. It was another emotional morning, but the chaplain at the hospital knew just what to say. We all went to the hospital cafeteria for breakfast, then Jonan and I came back here to sleep. It was a late night and early morning, so that was nice.

We went to Wal-Mart and picked up some things we needed and filled the car up with gas. I got the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine first season DVD boxed set. And I got some shoe goo to get rid of some cracks in the leather of the toes. Um, that was it as far as our errands go.

We then went to the hospital to wait for more news. The nurse came in and said that he would soon be in recovery and that then the doctor would come and talk to us. At about 5 he came in and told us that hte surgery went well...not just well, but better than anyone could have guessed. They removed the larynx, pharynx, and thyroid like they knew they'd have to, as well as the right lymph nodes (why do all of them have a "y" in them?). The nodes came back negative for cancer, so they did not have to remove the left ones. They also did not have to reconstruct anything from other parts of his body. This means chances of him being able to swallow and eat again are greatly increased. And they did not have to do a gastric lift. All in all, it went as well as it could. The tumor they removed was huge, like the size of a hotdog bun, but that does not matter. It is gone now, so we never have to worry about it again.

We went to dinner at Mac's, where we've eaten four times already, and it was great. We went over to the hospital to see Dad afterwards. He is doing very well considering what he has been through in the past day. Jonan and I are going back tomorrow, so we will see him in the morning. Hopefully he'll be a little more awake, but then again, he needs rest, so perhaps it's for the best.

All in all, today was one of the best and most relieving days I can remember. it is good to know the first and toughest part of this battle is over.
