Hah!! I just turned on my radio to listen to Fresh Air, a bit late, and heard DAVID BOWIE!!! Not as a guest, but a clip from "Extras" in which he was singing a song about Ricky Gervais. I've always thought they sounded very similar, by the way. I've never seen this episode of "Extras" but now I must. You can listen to the interview
here and the Bowie clip at about 11m45s.
I originally meant to write about my current "gender" confusion. I guess that fits in with David Bowie, sort of.
So I got to work and read the news, as is my ritual, and found
this article. Now, don't get me wrong, I understand that most people misuse the terms "gender" and "sex," but I think this goes beyond just the wrong word usage. I don't even understand what a "gender test" is. Is it like a drug test? Can anyone help me on this? I found this quote:
"An Indian athletics official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media said Sounderajan almost certainly never had sex-change surgery.
Instead, the official said Sounderajan appeared to have "abnormal chromosomes." The official also said the test revealed more Y chromosomes than allowed."
What does "extra Y chromosomes" mean? Does that have anything to do with gender? Alison thinks it might just be a test against performance-enhancing drugs or procedures which change your chromosomes and therefore make your body produce more testosterone, and therefore make you stronger and give you an unfair advantage?
I have to stop thinking about this. I have work to do and Ricky Gervais to listen to.
