RIP GotW and other news

On Friday my iPod played its final song.

"Glue of the World" came unstuck at approximately 1am, on the PATH platform at 9th st. I had a full bottle of wine in my bag, which broke when I set my bag down on the floor to wait for the train. It runined a lot of papers I had in there, and got my book wet, but mostly it soaked my iPod. I was so pissed, but who can I really blame?

Saturday Alison and I both slept late, but she slept later, and I played World of Warcraft all day. Then that night we went to see The Fountain which was fucking phenomenal. True to the expectations one would have of Darren Aronofsky, it was extremely powerful, but not in the same disturbing way that made Requiem for a Dream so amazing. It had an incredible metaphor that I think everyone in the media missed. They all say Hugh Jackman travels through time, but I couldn't see that as any more than a story device. Not that this is a detractor. It actualyl made the film all the better. Both he and Rachel Weiss were spectacular, and Clint Mansel's score was as moving if not more than the memorable Requiem theme. Matty Libatique did his usual visual magic, making him quickly rise up my elite list of top cinematographers. Overall, it reminded me a lot of What Dreams May Come, since it was easily the most spiritual movie since that came out in 1998. I want to see it again, so if anyone is in the mood, let me know. I think Alison wants to see it a second time, too.

Work has been busy, including a 6am, on-site job I did supervising a shoot at the NYC Department of Health where they voted the ban of transfat in the city. It was my first experience in this role, and I feel it went very well. I've also got a lot in the works with NYU to give students access and training with high end HD equipment, as well as a possible HD cinematography award for the First Run Festival. On Monday, I met with the owner, Anton, about adding a lighting rental department, which I'm excited about, though I know it's not something that I'll be able to get off the ground as quickly as I'd like. There's a lot of red tape in this company. I have a meeting with Tom today to discuss the timeline for increasing my pay as I take on more responsibility and get more experience with the systems here.

Now that "Heroes," "Lost," and "Studio 60" are all on winter hiatus, I have no tv to watch, so I'm going to use the opportunity to play more WoW, as well as catching up on Season 5 of 24, which came out on DVD Tuesday, so that I'm up to date when it begins January 14. I might also be able to finally watch the Netflix movies I've had since the spring. It's a shame to pay $15 a month just to hold onto the same three movies I don't plan on watching any time soon. I did rent, separately, Mini's First Time and Hard Candy, both of which were entertaining, but mediocre. I can think of better uses of my time.

I guess that's it. Is that it? Did I forget anything?
