So I was not too thrilled by the new HP. First and foremost it lacked direction. It was just a sequence of scenes with no real consistency of either style or tone. It made the already complicated and difficult-to-follow script even harder to work out for anyone who hadn't read the books (and even for me, who counts GoF as his favorite of the series.) The weight and magnitude of the events in the conclusion of the story were not made clear and it just seemed like yet another adventure for the Hogwarts Gang Kids. I was saddened to see that many of the side stories were gone, like the Dursleys, SPEW (which I think Rowling herself has completely forgotten she introduced, as it has not really been tied up in the last two books), and Percy's story-line. I also felt like Rita Skeeter was only halfway in the movie. She might as well have been left out for how lame a job they did at including her. All plot elements aside, the movie was paced awkwardly and again, had little stylistic continuity. I'm mad that they had such a hack director as Mike Newell (already responsible for subjecting the world to Mona Lisa Smile) instead of letting Alfonso Cuarón work at a reasonable schedule to get PoA done and still do GoF. *sigh* And the audience was the worst, most inconsiderate packed house I've been in for a long time. I guess that's what we get for going to the mall theater at the 7:30pm showing on opening night.
