Before I get to more pressing Hallowe'en matters, I must mention Friday night. We went to Pokipsi (this is the new spelling as the old way was counterintuitive) to see Laurie Anderson. It was an incredible show. I wish I could describe it better, but it was one of her long-format pieces, and not really a concert of songs and pre-released material. It was called "The End of the Moon" and centered around her final report she was required to give NASA when her tenure as their first (and last) artist in residence ended. It was mostly spoken word over keyboards, but she did a few solo violin pieces. Not really any singing. Most of what she spoke of was in some way space or science related, a lot on the moon, a lot on her experiences as an artists interacting with scientists at NASA facilities all over the country. Part of me is sad that she did this format because I can't go back and listen to it again, like I could when I saw her last time and she did a real setlist of songs that were on her previous albums. The parts I remember are all I have from the show. Which is, in its own way, sort of cool. But I like to be able to relive times I enjoy, which is why I buy movies instead of renting. I can't even really recount the things I do remember, because they would just be so far from what it was really like that I feel that it's sort of blasphemous. All I can say to anyone curious about the show, is that she's still touring all over the country and you should try to see the show because it was phenomenal. Alison and I were both in tears several times, especially toward the end, when she said some incredibly profound, yet simple, observations on the end of time, as well as when she talked about her dog Lolabelle. See? Me explaining it just doesn't cut it.
Saturday night we went to Williamsburg to hang out with Alison's friend Neeru. It was fun, but we left really late and didn't get there til like 12:30. We hung out at her place and then like five of us went to Alligator Lounge. That place is AMAZING!!! You get a free 12" brick oven pizza with every drink. We spent $20 on a pitcher and five pizzas, two with toppings. For five of us!!! How do they stay in business? The bartenders had matching tee shirts that I loved. They simply said "Halloween is Monday Assholes." Too true. We didn't dress up too elaborately, but seeing Alison in her goth clothes was enough to hold me over til next Halloween.
I can die happy now.
Yesterday, we did practically nothing. Since we didn't get home until 6:30 even with the extra hour for daylight savings time, we slept reall late and just loafed all day. I did spend hours finalizing plans home for Christmas. My dad was going to give me a frequent flyer trip so I could go home for free, but the only open dates for free trips were before the 21st and after the 28th, so I had to buy a one way and use just one half of the free round trip. SO now I have half a trip paid for already that I have a year to use. Yay. I will be home from the 20th through the 26th. If you live in KC and want to see me, make plans now before all the times are filled up.
Tonight is just passing out candy and watching at least one scary movie. Probably The Shining, as Alison's never seen it. Others I'd like to squeeze in if I can talk her into two would be The Silence of the Lambs, The Wicker Man, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, In the Mouth of Madness and Alien. Obviously not all of them, but one or two would be just about right.
Also check out the two new icons.
