I just watched Shoot 'Em Up. It's... nuts.
Imagine a film made by bright fifteen year-old boys who really, really loved the nursery shootout in Hard Boiled. Except, where the action in Woo movies is often described as balletic, here it's more Heath Robinson. It's kinda like Tom and Jerry with guns.
It's enjoyable; the three leads are great and all obviously had fun and it has some very cute moments, but... you know how the last fifteen minutes of an action movie is supposed to be the best bit? This is like eight of those in a row, complete with quips. It's rather exhaustingly hyper. Something of a spiritual twin to Crank, another action movie amped up to the point where it almost loses control of the joke. Shmup is less misogynistic than Statham's Odyssey but maybe even more preposterous. Preposterous in a good way, but still.
