She was driving after work, on her way to see a friend. Before leaving home, she’d extensively studied the map and memorised the routes that would lead her there. On arriving in the town, a different entry route from the usual, she would just follow signs to the centre and hope it would be easy.
She was just a little nervous. It was her first time alone in the car for a longer route, country roads, nobody there to help her find her way. Although confident that it would work, there was still a slight apprehension as she accelerated and found her way out of the city. Clutching with her left hand remained a tad difficult at times and roundabouts, even though marginally simpler than that freaky Magic one, were confusing at best.
Once out in the country she relaxed. Turning into an even smaller country route and she noticed she even accelerated! Hollow roads slowly lost their claustrophobic feel and could be perceived once more as pretty. Twists and turns stopped being frightening and became cross country fun. And that anxiousness when approaching a hilltop? That remained, though was mixed with a sense of anticipation what the next view would be. A soft “wooohoo” escaped her as the car seemed to get ground clearance at such a hilltop. Her own way of flying.
She felt free.
And when the view opened once more to show a valley that went on for miles, with a field caught solely by a lost ray of sunshine, a deep sigh escaped her involuntarily.
Strengthened by the experience, merry with the girly chat of that evening, she drove back home. And bolstered as she was, she missed her exit. And was unable to turn back. Getting lost in the streets of a city she’d held to be familiar, she couldn’t help but smile. And keep plodding on. She wasn’t afraid anymore to get lost - although she had locked her car door.
It was really good to be here. She felt like she was soaking up and evolving, with every step she took.
Outside the office at least.
