I doubt many people care, but whatever. These are my musings on the awesome recruiting by the UCLA XC/TF coaches.
When I came in to UCLA, we didn't have many big name runners. John Rankin, who would go on to be the first Bruin to break 4 minutes for the mile, and this other kid who's name I forgot were right around the 1:48 PR mark in the 800 but were more consistently running 1:52s. Matt Bruno, who was probably the fastest white guy I've ever seen win state in the 100m, was sucking it up in the 200.
Then. The next two years, they recruited former 800m CA-State champ Mike Haddan and the amazing Shackleton twins, Laef Barnes the awesome runner from Mead HS, Claire rethmeier, Olga something or other from Penninsula, Kevin freaking Craddock, David freaking Kletch, Marlon Patterson, Jenna Timinsky, etc. WOAH!!! what a recruiting class.
AND NOW! ALREADY: Mike Cybulski, whom all the TO people know about, as well as Cory Primm. Kent Morikawa, the asian invasion. Shannon Murakami, who runs faster than most of the people on the TO team, including the guys. WHOAH!!!
All I can say, is it is a good time to be a Bruin running fan.
