FILLED: How Sweet It Is (1/2)zubeneschamaliMarch 1 2016, 05:58:43 UTC
Jensen was hunched over his laptop, typing away at his next blog post. In between sentences, his gaze flickered to the left side of the monitor, where his Twitter feed slowly rolled past as new tweets were added. He never thought he'd be able to make a living as a food blogger, but his regular posts on Austin restaurants and his own homemade recipes had garnered considerable attention. Between ads and commissions, he could scrape together enough to make his own small contribution to the household.
Although, from the banging and cursing coming from the kitchen, the household might need a few more dollars pretty soon.
Jensen sighed. Jared had made him promise not to leave his office this afternoon, declaring that he was making a birthday surprise that would totally be blog-worthy. Jensen had his doubts-only one of his posts in four years had come from Jared's culinary efforts, and that was using mini wieners decorated with olive helmets and facemasks drawn in mustard to make tiny football players for a Super Bowl party. It had involved no appliances, no generation of fire or even heat, and everyone was better off for it.
Jensen clicked through a few folders so that the emergency number for the condo complex was on his screen in case they had to call off the fire department once the smoke alarm went off.
Sure enough, about five minutes later, right as Jensen was reading a review of the new barbecue joint on Guadalupe, the shrill cry of the smoke alarm pierced his eardrums. "Jay?" he shouted, clapping his hands over his ears.
"Everything's fine!" Jared called back. "Don't come out!" This was followed by the sound of the patio door being slid open and the windows being lifted.
Jensen waited, finger poised over the call button on Skype, but thankfully, the alarm cut out almost immediately. Sighing with relief, he went back to work.
More clanking and cursing ensued over the next few minutes. The high-pitched whirr of the blender was instantly followed by a loud, "Shit!" before the blender cut out.
Jensen looked over his shoulder at the closed door of his office. "Everything all right out there?"
"Everything's great!" Jared replied, sounding a little strained. "Stay where you are!"
Jensen rubbed a hand over his jaw. If he stayed in his office, he wouldn't ruin Jared's surprise. On the other hand, he wasn't sure what kind of state Jared's surprise was in at this point, not to mention their kitchen. They did own the condo free and clear, but only within the last couple of months, and Jensen really didn't want to be paying for major renovations or repairs so soon.
There was a loud yelp, and then footsteps coming down the hall to the bathroom across from Jensen's office. The water in the sink started running, and then Jensen heard Jared fumbling in the cabinet under the sink.
That was where they kept the Band-Aids, and that meant this had gone far enough. "Jay, did you hurt yourself?"
"It's just a flesh wound!"
That wasn't exactly reassuring-Jensen couldn’t remember how many times they watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail together while dating-and so he saved his document and stood up. "I'm coming out."
"No, Jensen, you really don't have to, I just-"
Jensen flung open the door to see Jared with his hand under the running water, a thin red line on the side of his thumb continuously welling red as fast as the water whisked it away. "Jesus, Jared!"
"Jensen, it's fine. Just a little cut."
"Don't just run water over it, put pressure on it." He crossed the hallway in two steps and was pressed up against Jared, closing his hand around Jared's thumb and squeezing tight. "Don't you know first aid?"
"I wasn't the Boy Scout," Jared said with a light hip check.
"Good thing you've got me, then," Jensen replied.
"Don't I know it," Jared said more softly. "Especially since I'm such a fuck-up."
"Hey now. Don't talk about my husband like that." Jensen gave him a stern look from under his brows.

Jared shrugged one shoulder. "I can't even follow the directions on a fucking box of cake mix."
"People don't always get it right their first try," Jensen replied.
"I tried when we visited home last week," Jared said, his voice smaller. "Momma said I shouldn't try it again without supervision."
"And you did anyway."
Jared nodded, lip caught between his lower teeth.
Jensen sighed. "What the hell did you cut yourself on?"
"Um. Garnishes."
"On a cake?"
"Cupcakes. Chocolate curls, because I know how much you love chocolate, and even though they're chocolate cake and frosting, I thought it would be nice to have some of those shavings on top, you know?" When Jensen nodded encouragingly, Jared went on, "So I bought this big block of chocolate, but the knife slipped, and, yeah." He wriggled his thumb in Jensen's grip. "At least I didn't bleed into the cake batter."
"That's something," Jensen agreed.
Jared grabbed his arm. "But you can't go out there. Not until I've cleaned it up. And gone to the bakery down the street to get cupcakes, because these are…not going to work."
"How do you know?"
"Because the beaters were rotating at pretty high speed when I put them down into the bowl, and so there's kind of cake batter…um. Well. Most of it's outside of the bowl. There might be enough for a couple of cupcakes. Assuming I got all of the eggshell bits out of the batter."
Only then did Jensen notice the dark brown splotches across Jared's UT t-shirt. "Jay, you didn't have to do this."
"I wanted to," he replied. "I'm so useless at the thing you're best at, and I thought it was time I gave it a try."
"You're not useless, Jay. But next time, let me help you, okay?"
Jared nodded, head hanging forward, bangs falling over his eyes.
"It's okay, babe." Jensen leaned over and kissed his cheek. When Jared turned towards him, he placed a more solid kiss on Jared's mouth. "When my laptop screen goes blank, who keeps me from freaking out that I've lost a week's worth of work?"
"Same person who keeps reminding you that you need a better backup system than that cheap-ass hard drive that keeps having to be re-partitioned," Jared muttered.
"That's right." Jensen kissed his cheek again. "My big ball of sunshine."
A tiny smile curled the corner of Jared's mouth, and Jensen felt his heart lift. He loosened his grip on Jared's thumb and was even happier when he saw the bleeding had almost stopped. He carefully wrapped a Band-Aid around the top of Jared's thumb and then gave it a gentle kiss. The tiny smile grew bigger, and Jensen grinned in reply.
Then something else occurred to him, and, fearing the answer but needing to know it anyway, he asked, "What about the frosting?"
Jared blinked. "Oh. Um, that was just from a can. I didn't get to open it yet."
Well, that was something, Jensen thought. Slowly, he stuck out his tongue, licking down the line of Jared's thumb where it wasn't covered by the bandage. "Think you could bring it from the kitchen?" he asked. "I suddenly have a real craving for chocolate frosting. And you."
Jared's eyes were wide. "That-that could be arranged."
Jensen lifted his eyebrows, and suddenly Jared was pulling his hand away and scampering back down the hallway. Jensen grinned to himself, even as he heard another bang and thump from the kitchen.
He was suddenly really looking forward to unwrapping his birthday present.

This Jared is now a favorite of mine! How he went so quickly from embarrassment over his cupcakes to total sarcasm over the way Jensen treats his computer system! ♥ So schmoopy and delightful, Z!
