I just want to declare that my dad is the best parent in the world. (at least compared to my mother)
Last night I was talking to my mom while coworker and I were driving to Michigan (we have a four-hour meeting here today). I asked her if on the way back she could perhaps pick me up from a simple intersection near a major tollway in our area - this would save the driver from having to go too far out of the way to drop me off at my apartment, or save me a ton of time so he wouldn't just drop me off downtown then I would have to take the train back home after spending four hours in a car.
I said it would be like 6ish and that she could come over to visit the kitters (who she constantly says she wants to see) and we could do dinner in my neighborhood. Her response was a very unenthusiastic "We'll have to see how I feel tomorrow." Which is pretty much her response anytime I ask her about making plans to do something together. Now, she has MS, and I get that she gets run down easily and is often in pain near the end of the day, but I HATE how this is her patented response to pretty much everything I ever suggest to her, ever. I wish I were joking here. 99.9% of the time, this is her answer to my questions. She doesn't ever seem interested in doing anything unless it's just sitting at their house or going to the movies, meaning I ALWAYS go to them (granted, this is a HUGE chip on my shoulder because my entire family demands this of me; no one ever comes to or is proactive with me).
I just spoke with my dad, who has bowling tonight at an alley that is only 5-10 minutes from my apartment. His response was a happy, albeit somewhat groggy because he just woke up, "Yeah, that sounds like a plan, call me from the road so I know your timing."
And THIS is why he's my favorite and why I spend hundreds of dollars on his birthday presents every year. Did I mention this year I got him Paul McCartney tickets? (okay, so this one is kind of self-serving seeing as I'm dying to see Sir Paul, myself, but still, they cost a pretty penny) That same week I'm seeing NKOTB/Boyz II Men (omg!) and The Script/Train. JULY IS GONNA BE AWESOME.
