Jensen accepts the challenge and sprints forward, trying to catch up to the accomplice. They're heading straight for the end of the alleyway before a right turn could take them out onto a main street when he hears a muted gunshot and then his walkie goes off with Hodges' voice yelling over the line.
Officer down! Repeat, Officer down! 40th and California, back alleyway. Officer down!
Jensen stops in his tracks and his heart beats twenty times faster than it just was, and without another thought, he turns around to run back from where he came.
He takes a right where Jared had gone left and at the opening to the street, Jared is on the ground, flinching and slowly rolling his head from one side to the other.
Jensen races faster than before and drops to Jared's side, ignoring the way the pavement tears through his pants and cuts into his knees.
"Jesus Christ, you moron!" Jensen shouts as he runs his hands over Jared's body in search of something wet and warm in his clothes. "You're such a fucking idiot. Why did you take the guy with the gun? You shouldn't've run off like that."
Jared bats Jensen's hands away, scowling at him and trying to shuffle away, but that's when Jensen notices that it's Jared's thigh that's hit and he's having a hard time really moving anywhere.
Jensen clamps his hands around Jared's thigh. He presses impossibly hard and ignores how Jared hisses through the pain of it.
"I'm gonna be fine," Jared says between clenched teeth.
"Yeah, you look real fine, you jackass. And while we're talking about how great you are, where's the suspect?"
Jared manages to sit up, groaning through the effort, and sets his hands around Jensen's to add to the pressure. "Aldis went after him after he made the call."
It doesn't matter, really, Jensen's so fired up he can't think straight and yelling at Jared is the only thing he can do right now. The suspect isn't here to take that place. "You're such a stupid shit, running off and doing that. I cannot believe you."
Jared grabs at one of Jensen's wrists and tries to pry the hand off his thigh, but Jensen won't let go. "Stop it, would you?" Jared demands. He looks just as pissed off as Jensen feels right now. "You didn't get the other guy either, so quit blaming me."
"I lost that guy because my partner got his stupid ass shot."
"Don't fucking blame me!"
"Well don't fucking scare me and we'll be fine!"
Everything is quiet for about five seconds as they stare at each other, but then they're interrupted by the squeal of sirens coming their way.
It's a rush of the EMTs getting Jared onto a stretcher and into the ambulance. It takes a few seconds of hesitation when they ask if Jensen's coming with, but he ultimately decides he couldn't be anywhere but with Jared at a time like this. He jumps up into the back of the bus and sits quietly, holding Jared's hand while he suffers through the pain of the EMTs cutting open his jeans and checking his wound.
When Jensen tightens his grip on Jared's hand, Jared glances up at him and manages a meager smile. The bullet went through and he'll be okay. As okay as one can be after being shot.
Worse thing Jensen imagines is a few weeks on desk duty while it heals. Their suspects are probably back on the run, ready to go into hiding again, and now Jensen is down a partner. But somehow, he'll wrap up the case by then. Just so he can be smug about it when Jared returns.
Jared must read his mind. "Save that dickbag for me, alright?"
Jensen smirks. "You got first dibs."
