I know the following looks long, but iPod users should read this. If you have another type of MP3 player, but want to see what the excitement is about and skip the iPod BS, start at the paragraph before the bullet list.

So I have my 1st gen iPod nano, which is beyond the Apple warranty. I named it Slam Betty. I love it. I love it soo much. It ( Read more... )

You can still do your own CD,s but from what I have been reading, you can only buy music online through Itunes, all others won't work right. Now. another article I was reading, the author describes, how his iPod, after an update, stopped working on his PC, and he had to manage his music on his MAC. Somehow, it stopped working outside of Apple Period. I just don't like that attitude. I will by a cheaper mp3 player in the future, who supports or encourages options. Microsoft Zune and Apple iPod are out for me. Its sad too, cause I really like my iPod, so I hope she never dies.

As for Apple, I like their lossless codec, but their m4a format sucks. I don't like it. I like ogg. Its free to do whatever the fuck you want with it, including share the codec to who ever. With this non apple firmware on my iPod now, I can use any format from anywhere I want.

But did you check out the link? Super cool!!! Plus my old school nano now plays video!!!

Chess stats are me 1, nano 1. Tie breaker to be started later today!

I have thought about the MP3/phone, but my phone gets so beat up, I have something with less features and more ability to get beat down on. I can use it in the rain, and it survives being in the same pocket as my keys when I am out hiking.

I hated itunes when I was in windows, but for podcasts, it was my best choice for the iPod. Plenty of other softwares out there took care of the music fine, but I was best with itunes for my independent news and history obsessions.

All in all, I am glad I found this software, it is pretty damn sweet. When my iPod finally dies, I will be buying a different digital music player and putting Rock Box on that as well. I really dig the interface and the fact that I can set it up the way I want real easy like.

Have you made your media player Linux yet? I am curious to know how that goes for you, and I will be more than willing to answer any questions that I can. The more I learn in linux, the easier my computing life gets. I am to the point where I don't even like using the Windows box at work.

I have a new nano with video, so I don't much care about the other features, but it would be cool to have all files compatable.

Your icon makes me wet.

Seriously.

Yeah, not having to worry much about the file format is really helpful. Especially since I am on Linux now and I am converting my MP3's over to ogg format. MP3 technically costs money for licensing, and Apple and Microsoft just pay a big yearly fee for that. Ogg costs nothing and blows the shit out of MP3 and most other formats. I can even make the lyrics of the song show up in my player with ogg if I wanted to take the time to add them or get it with them pre set up.

Still I love the Chess function as well. And Doom. And pacman.

It is pretty sexy, isn't it? Look at 'em... rawr.

Oooh the lyrics would be fun. But I just don't know how technical I want to get with it all. And I don't need the games for anything. I think I've played the ones I've got maybe once. For five minutes.
