Lasting Memories

Only 8 days left……

On that very same day Pi told Kame about what the Doctor had said to him. What made Pi sadder was the look on his best friend’s face. Kame smiled at him trying to hide the sadness he too feels inside. The next day Kame was discharge from the hospital and stayed inside the house for the next 2 days. Pi takes all of his courage and tries to talk to Kame.

Inside Kame’s room……

Pi knocks at the door and sees his friend sitting by the window sill looking outside. As if he is waiting for something that would not come. He approaches him and taps the younger one’s shoulder. Kame looks up and gave Pi a simple smile, a smile that didn’t even reach his eyes.

“Please stop that…” PI says. Kame frowns at him. “Stop pretending…I’m sick of seeing you like this” he looks away from Kame and turns his attention outside of the window.

“What are you talking about Pi?...I don-“ Kame tries to say but was cut-off by his friend.

“Giving fake smiles when it is clearly written in your eyes how sad you are.” Kame smiles and hugs his crying friend.

“Thanks for the understanding…but do you think that if I cry right now my life would be extended?” receives no answer but he still continues “I know you are worried about me and I am Thankful for everything that you’ve done for me. But to see you breakdown like this makes it harder for me. Do you understand?” Pi only nods in response.

“By the way…I wonder what happened to Jin…he never showed up again.” Kame asks as he returns his attention outside the window. Now Pi knows why his friend watches the day pass by his window because he is waiting for Jin.

“Kame…I-I have something to tell you actually…”Pi is about to say when suddenly he was interrupted by the ringing from the doorbell. He excuses himself to see who might have visited them.

A few minutes later, Kame starts to get worried. Thinking what is taking his friend so long? He stands Up from where he was seated, walks towards his door and opens it. He slowly walks down the stairs. While walking there is this feeling inside him that he cannot explain. This feeling is all too familiar to him, The moment he sets both of his feet on the ground what he sees surprises him.

There at their door, with a bouquet in his hands and the smile that gave warmth to Kame’s already dying heart, stands Jin. The Jin that Kame has wanted to see once more and share stories that he has yet told the older guy.

“Hi!” Jin says with a smile. As if waiting for that cue, Kame rushes towards Jin and hugs him tight like his life depends on Jin and Jin alone. Pi witnessing the scene unfolds in front of him nods his head to the older guy, excusing himself to make tea for them.

Kame releases Jin from his hug and looks at him. How Kame missed looking at that face and how he is going to miss it once he departs from this world they both live in. He wonders, how would Jin react when he finds out that he only has a week to live?

“What happened to you? I was getting worried.” Kame asks with a pout on his pretty face. The moment Jin saw the pout from his Kazu’s face he wants to kiss the pout away, but then he knows that he can’t he still can’t not after he ran away from him when he needed him the most.

“Oh…I ah-…need to do some searching that’s why I wasn’t able to visit you.” Jin explains. It was true Jin went on a search or rather soul searching. He thinks that if he were to stay by Kame’s side then he has to be strong and accept the fact that one day Kame would leave him, but even after all that his heart will remain unchanged.

“Oh…wow! Whatever it was you were searching for, must be really important. Ne?” Kame says giving him a warm smile. Jin nods his answer.

The three of them sat at the dining table enjoying their warm tea. Kame sips from his cup, and then turns his attention to his best friend. Pi sensing that Kame is giving him the looks turns to his friend.

“What’s the matter Kame-chan?”

“You were about to say something to me earlier right? What was is about?” Kame asks. Pi shakes his head and answers “Nothing, It was nothing” Not wanting to bother his friend anymore Kame settles with the reply he got from his friend.

“Actually, I have something to say to you Kazu” Jin suddenly says. Getting the attention of the two persons he is with.

“What is it Jin?”

“I hope you don’t mind…but as your friend I think I have the right to know…” Jin stops, waiting for any violent reaction from the two. Yamapi, taking the hint he already knows what Jin is trying to tell Kame. He wants to stop him, but then again he has no courage to do it. Jin has the right to know and so as his friend.

“I know about your sickness and I know that you only have less than a month left….” Silence fills the household. Kame takes a sip from his cup once more, as he lowers it he looks at Jin with those sad eyes of his which breaks Jin’s heart into tiny million pieces.

“Only a week left Jin…a week” Kame says. This caught Jin by surprise. How could that be? Yamapi had just told him that he still has less than a month. So how come it ended up in just a week? As Kame looks into Jin’s eyes he can see, betrayal, sadness, confusion, loneliness, worries and love. As much as he doesn’t want the person he loves the most to suffer, he can’t do anything but to accept what awaits them in the next few days.

At times, Kame thanks the one who created him for letting him meet Jin even if in a limited time only. Because with Jin, that is when he felt the need to live and to over come this obstacle that he is facing right now.

“Pi, I still need to do a lot of things but only a little time left…” Kame says “Do you think you could help me?” Yamapi is about to answer when Jin beats him to it.

“Kazu, do you want me to accompany you?” Kame smiles

“Would you do that for me Jin?”

“Of course I would. If it meant I would be able to spend a day or two with you.” At that moment, it is the first time since the day that Kame found out about his remaining days; did Yamapi see the smile reached the younger one’s eye. He thought that maybe it wasn’t a bad idea at all  for Kame to spend his remaining days with the person he truly cares and loves.

A week left…

The next day Jin and Kame went out to do some sporting activities, since Kame said that he wants to try playing sports for the last time. They ended up playing soccer, in which Jin teaches Kame how to play and kick the ball properly, and also Kame’s favorite sport baseball. Both of them enjoyed their day together, wishing that this wasn’t their last. That one day they could still do these things together. Jin knows that he is asking for the impossible but then, wishing it would not hurt anyone right?

The following day, the two of them were still out together. As they were walking Kame saw a sign that caught his attention. Being all excited to see what it is, he grabs Jin’s hand and drags him towards the said place. There at that place a bit tarpaulin sign says “Adopt for a day”.

At first Jin has no Idea as to why Kame brought him to an orphanage. But when he saw Kame being accompanied by a small boy that is when he got what Kame meant. They ended up adopting the boy whose name is Hayato for the day. The three of them pretended like they were a real family. Jin as the father, Kame is the kind and caring mother while Hayato is their only son. Even if it was just a pretend to Kame it was real. He really wants to have a family of his own, he told this to Jin and he was glad that the latter agreed.

Later that day, Jin suggested that if they should have a small wedding ceremony since they were a family now. Kame blushed at Jin’s suggestion, but then agreed in the end when he saw the bright smile on Hayato’s round face. Kame didn’t mind marrying Jin at all since he truly loves the man, but the thing is he still hasn’t told Jin about what he truly feels, and so he promised himself that he would confess to Jin before everything ends.

The day ends when they returned Hayato back to the orphanage. There was a sad look on the boy’s face knowing that he wouldn’t see his adopted parents again. Kame hugs the little kid and whispers soothing words to the boy’s ear. Even if it was just for a short time, Kame came to love the said boy; he wished that someday when he grows up he would still remember him.

Last memories…a day had passed…

They weren’t prepared for what was to come. It took all of them by surprise, especially Jin because he was there when it all ended. He knew it would come sooner but he is not expecting it that soon. He wasn’t able to properly say his good-bye….

The day they visited Kazuya’s parents was unexpected for Jin. What took him by surprise is how the younger man had introduced him to them. Telling them that he is a very special friend, a friend that has a special place in his heart. Jin knows about what it meant but then, he wants to hear those words from the younger man; he can wait, he knows he can because he is doing this for the one he truly loves.

Their visit to his parents was one of the unforgettable moments of Kame. It has been a long time since he saw them. He really missed all of them, his father, mother, his 2 older brothers and his younger brother. It saddens him that this will be the last time he will see them. As much as he wants to tell them about his condition; seeing the joyful smiles on their faces he knew deep inside that he can’t takes those smiles away from them. Kame was sure that someday his family will understand as to why he came to a decision like that, after all they were the ones who brought him up to be a good person he is now. In the end he ended up not informing them of anything at all.

It happened the day after their visit to the Kamenashi’s. The morning Kame woke up he knew it was coming and so he has to do his last task before everything ends. Kame called Jin and asked him if he could accompany him that day. He wants to visit every shrine and every church they know around the city.

It was getting late and the sun is almost setting, one last shrine to go and Kame would confess to Jin. The shrine they would visit is located atop of a hill. Kame and Jin were looking at the long set of steps presented to them. They both smiled at each other. Keeping in their memory this moment they shared together.

“Are you ready to go Kazu?” Jin asks smiling at the young man; he receives a nod from the latter. Jin grabs his hand and led the way up.

Half-way through the steps Kame asks Jin “Do you believe in love at first sight?” Jin doesn’t stop from walking but answers the question anyway.

“Yea, I do. Because that is how I fell in love with you…actually it’s not the first but the second time I saw you. But then our first meeting wouldn’t be counted right? I mean I was a complete jerk that night so I know that…” he stops to look back only to find Kame lying on one of the steps. Jin rushes to his side and cradles him in his arms.

“Kazu wake up! Kazu open your eyes!” Jin is panicking. Kame slowly opens his eyes and smiles sweetly at Jin. He touches Jin’s face and said “Do you know how much you mean to me?”

Tears began to flow from both of their eyes. Is Kazu saying his good-bye? Is this it? Is there not any hope left? These are the thoughts that went on Jin’s mind at that moment. He knows that he has to think positive; but he can’t because he knows that he would be fooling himself and he would be hurt more.

“please Kazu…stop saying those things…there is still hope…”

“h-hope…I thank you for that My dearest Jin…”

“No! no, please stop...d-don’t do this…”

“I-I hav-e to g-go now…”

“Y-You can’t! You promised Hayato that you would see him again right? Ne?”

“Jin…c-can you carry me up to the shrine?” Kame requests Jin nods and carries the one he loves in a piggy back style and starts walking up the stairs. The walk was silent; the only assurance of Jin that Kame was still alive is by the short breaths beside his ear.

“Jin…please tell me that you love me too…” Tears fell from Jin’s eyes as he takes the last remaining steps towards the shrine. “I love you Kazuya…Now and forever” Jin can’t help but fall on his knees, crying his heart out. He may have not hear the answer that he has been wanting to hear from the younger man, but he knows and he can feel how much the younger man loves him. Their love story might be short and not at colorful as some other people’s story, but for Jin what they have shared was enough to say that this is the best love story that he ever known of.

“Hey, How are you? Sorry I wasn’t able to bring flowers for you today. Promise, I really tried but since it’s Sunday some of the flower shops are closed I hope you understand. By the way, I found a new apartment and I am planning to move there on Wednesday. I just need to fix some documents and we are ready to go. Oh, I visited your parents, I mean our parents since we got married before even if it’s not official. I hope you don’t mind though. Anyway, as I was saying I visited them the other day and they are all doing fine. Although they still miss you, they have moved on knowing that it is what you wanted for them. I had crossed paths with Pi some days ago; he says he is doing fine. Actually that best friend of yours turned out to be gay as well. He is dating Ryo. I can see that Pi is happy with him so I have no objections about it, you should too.

I miss you, you know that right? It’s been a year already. You know what? Never did I regret meeting you or ever falling in love you. You are the most wonderful gift that came into my life. I tried to move on really, but this heart of mine beats for you and you alone. So yeah you have to deal with it whether you like it or not. I hope that one day we would be able to meet again, and when that time comes…I will surely fall in love with you again…” Jin stopped when a small kid came running to him, Jin smiles as he carries his son.

“Daddy, are we going now?” The kid in his arms asks.

“Alright then, say good-bye to your dad.” Jin says

“Bye bye Kazu-daddy. Hayato will be a good boy now.” Hayato says, Jin smiles at this and kisses his son’s cheek.

“We’ll be going now, I love you Kazuya…always”

=the end=

A/N: after Kame dies, few days after Jin went back to the orphanage and adopt Hayato. Knowing that this is what Kame wants to do if he was still alive. I apologize if this last part sucks and it seems like it was rushed, because i wasn't feeling well when I was writing this.
