That was the last thing that Fred Liepowitz heard in his lifetime on Earth. Well, technically the last thing he heard was BaN--, but we'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he did, indeed, learn his lesson.
The man doing the banging was, in this case, Leo Carolla. He was a barber. Which what people assumed he meant when he told them he was an expert at taking a few inches of a person's head off. Leo might have been a bit of a short trigger. He may have also been a murderer (Editor's Note: He was). But at least he wasn't a liar. It was that little tidbit of information, plus the lack of a conscience with a depravity meter, that let him sleep at night.
That and the fact that Freddie was an asshole. A real putz. Only a putz would have not known to never, ever ask Mr. Phinnaeus Leonardo Carolla III if he was certain on his blackjack hit. Afterall, Leo had put the terminal backspin on three other croupiers. In the last two weeks.
Never question a man that technically owns half of the cash in the whole casino. Por Unlucky Eddie. He had been on vacation for the last two weeks. But, it was just another day and the Lucky Falls Casino (and Grille). Just now the cards were a little messier than they had been just twenty seconds prior, and the stakes just got a lot higher for the next possible putz who would step up to deal the cards. Lucky Falls was the only Casino on the Coast that had a disability insurance payout that almost equalled the semi-annual income. There were 12 very convincing reasons for this. And if you were the Merona County Coroner, you would be extracting all twleve from somewhere on Eddie Liebowitz's person in about three hours.
But, like death -- that's just part of your average life in Meridian City.
