Ever since he joined Seigaku, Ryoma had attended many tennis camps to improve his tennis. There was always something to perfection, like, let’s say, his double play.
He did not want to play doubles, but Tezuka subscribed, so Ryoma did too.
Only, things didn’t go as planned.
To his dismay, he had ended up with Atobe Keigo. They bickered a lot, but knew they had to work hard. Somewhere along the line, they became friends. Kind of.
But Ryoma was still an obstinate brat when the Day of Trust came. (Whoever named it like that should be ashamed) It was a day where you learnt to trust your partner.
The shorty had refused to do it. That got the two partners into an argument full of wits and snark.
The debate lasted until Atobe decided he had enough. He had paid to get in there, and money wasn’t meant to go to waste.
He pushed the inside of Ryoma’s knee with his foot, making him lose balance and fall. Atobe easily caught him.
“There,” the gray haired boy said with a smirk. “We’ve done it.”
“You think I’ll trust you now?!”
Eventually, Ryoma did. And enjoyed it. Well, kind of.

Atobe frowned when he realized that he was being watched. Looking up, he saw Seigaku’s rookie staring at him.
“What is it, brat?”
The golden eyes did not move. “Every five minutes, someone dies.”
“And?”
The boy smirked. “If I watch you long enough, I’ll see you die.”
Atobe couldn’t understand what was going through his comrade’s head. “Probabilities that I suddenly die are low.”
“Yeah.” A moment passed, and Ryoma finally looked away. “But, blink and you’ll miss it. I stay.”
“Say it and I’ll say yes,” Atobe sighed.
“Che,” Ryoma snorted. “Wanna date?”
They both smiled.
Yes.

Ryoma wondered if wanting Atobe Keigo made him shallow. Seeing as he didn’t know why he wanted the boy, surely it meant he was being superficial, maybe greedy. Some people had seen the two of them flirting, and many had accused Ryoma of taking advantage of the wealthy heir. Ryoma remembered asking himself if, perhaps, they were right.
He had questioned himself several times until at last, Atobe woke up.
“Morning, Monkey King.”
A pair of sleepy blue eyes met his. “You did not leave.”
The smaller teen shook his head. It was not a question.
It was an answer.

That day, Atobe Keigo was feeling nosy.
Of course, he had the right to. Beside, he did nothing but shuffle through Ryoma’s old school essays. One had attracted his attraction: it summarized everything Ryoma had done that was regarded as important.
“Starting now, Ore-sama will be a part of those events.”
“Mada mada dane.”
Later that night, Ryoma had snuggled up to Atobe and, in the darkness, agreed to show weakness. “Don’t ever leave me.”
Smiling, Atobe had promised he would never. Decades later, he stayed true to his word.
Together, they had grown up, together, they would grow old.
