[The voice makes Dean's head snap up. He recognizes her voice immediately but it takes him a half second to respond.]

Anna? Where are you?

Sam locked himself up in the cage with Lucifer. [Which isn't the end of the story but it's by far the most painful part. When he speaks again his voice is very husky, very quiet] And I let him

Oh... Oh, Dean... [Her voice is soft, and full of pain. She may not have had the easiest relationship with the Winchesters, but that cuts her to the quick.]

We got him back. [It's clear by the tone of his voice that there's a lot of story to that and it wasn't an easy process. He parks the Impala outside the cathedral and gets out, heading inside.]

[She falls silent, hearing the roar of the Impala outside. She's sitting in the back, calmly, even though she is anything but calm.

This place unnerves her. She has no memories in-between leaving and returning, how could she, she's about to die back home, and here months have passed - years for Dean.

Can she even expect him to still care for her?]

[He does still care and it's odd because now he's got all these feelings for Lisa mixed up in them as well. He walks inside the church slowly, hesitating at the threshold then stepping on inside. He catches sight of Anna sitting there and slides in next to her, his hip not quite touching hers.]

[It's strange, fighting the instinct to lean into him and as equally disturbing that it's an instinct at all. Her time as a human was more impactful than she'd ever realized.]

How is Sam? He's still here, isn't he?

Yeah, he's still here. He's doing okay. Avoiding fangirls this week. [And he's fighting the urge to put his arm around her shoulders. They're both dumbasses.]
