My well used Nexus 5 phone was finally almost unusable with the battery lasting only moments if the screen was powered while it was uncoupled to power supply.
I managed to limp along with an external battery pack for a time. But that was often as comical as it was impractical.
Why not just sign another deal and get a new phone?
Turns out that I can't keep the current "loyalty" plan I've got if I want to upgrade to a new phone. Unless I want to buy the phone outright.
The new Pixel is pretty nice. But it's over $800.
My phone can't do 4K video. But other than that, I'm not really getting much that I can't do already.
...if I'm connected to a power supply.
I called around to see about having the phone repaired. I was looking at about $90 for a new battery. But no guarantee that would fix the problem, as apparently there's also a regulator that can go bad.
Thought about going this way. But it was going to be such a pain in the ass to completely wipe the phone before giving it the repair guys, that it just didn't seem worth it.
So, I ordered a battery and toolkit online and replaced it myself.
My ebony wood case was also in need of either replacement or repair. Hot glue for the win!
So far I've shot some video, run Google Earth for awhile, and a few other high drain utilities that would have shut the phone right down before. So far, so good.
One of our desktops here gave up video a couple of days back. Haven't been able to revive it yet. But found a deal on a dual Hexa-core system that will be a major upgrade.
The quad core will spring back to life as soon as it's replaced of course. But I've already got plans for that.
