FIB 226 scarf for Mom

Hello again!

So this week I've finished two scarves (yay!) but this post is just for one of them. This one is for the scarf I made for my mom as a belated birthday gift.

I had some trouble with this scarf because the blue yarn I used (as you will see in the photos) wasn't really strong enough to be a warp so the strings kept breaking as I applied tension. So this scarf took a while to get off the ground. But in the end, it came out really well-- I'm actually surprised how well it did come out in the end because of all the trouble it gave me. So without further ado...

It's ruffly! I'll explain how. The purple yarn is a natural fiber (specifically wool) and everything else-- the blue, orange, and black yarns-- are synthetic fibers. When the finished scarf is put in the wash (in warm water) the wool shrinks but the synthetic fibers don't. So the shrunken wool pull at the synthetic fibers to ruffle it.

Now onto the colors. I absolutely love this blue (though, as I explained before, it was hard to work with in the warp). The wool is the purple yarn-- I had to include purple, because it's my mom's favorite color. And I included some black yarn to make it match her coat, too. And the orange-red-yellow yarn I used on the weft is my second favorite of all the yarns I used. I thought it added a nice contrast to the cool colors, especially that brilliant blue.

For the fringes, I twisted equal parts of all of the leftover warp ends in the same direction and knotted them, so they twisted over on themselves to create this double twisted effect. Neat, huh?

So I hope you liked it, and more importantly I hope Mom likes it. I guess I'll find out soon when she sees these pictures.

I'll be back tomorrow (or later today) to update on my latest scarf. See you then!
