CMD 281 my name is

Hi guys. I'm back for second semester, and I realized that I haven't updated on all of my CommDesign stuff from last semester. So I want to finish updating on all of that stuff, and the rest of the stuff that I have for Narrative Drawing, before I get back into the swing of this semester.

This was our last real project for CMD 281. We had to basically make a nametag for ourselves that had a descriptor on the bottom. For example: "My name is Brianna, and I'm a musician." They gave us a list of words to choose from. We had to use the typography of our name to convey the meaning of the descriptor word. It sounds weird, but you'll get it when you see it, I hope. I picked musician, schizophrenic, and nerd.

So this was my first idea, and my best idea, for musician. We had to come up with a bunch, of course, but my professor really liked the happy accident that my name ended in a letter that is so conducive to creating a flying V. This actually went through a lot of transformations-- at one point I actually drew on the individual strings the whole way up my name. But I really liked the way it turned out in the end.

This was the hardest one for me to get a real feel for, and to be honest I don't think I did the best job on it. Originally, because part of the definition of schizophrenia was "mental fragmentation" I just had my name falling apart into little pieces. My professor told me that he saw little faces in the way I placed the fragments, even though I didn't do that intentionally, so he told me to work with that. Another professor told me to distort the faces, to make them creepy and scary. I came up with this, but I'm afraid it ended up much more literal than I had originally intended.

Nerd was the one I had the most ideas for. I really liked a lot of my other ideas (the B in my name turned on its side to look like thick broken nerdy glasses, or my name in the Spider-Man typeface) the people in my class and my professor were most receptive to this one. Especially since most of these elements actually appear on the real periodic table. (N, Na, Br, Co, and Li.) So it's not really my kind of nerdiness, but it works anyway.

Okay, well, that's it for 281. Since I don't have really any homework yet, I'm going to try to update a lot more tonight and tomorrow so I can get my 251 stuff out of the way (there isn't that much) along with the rest of my stuff from Narrative Drawing. So see you again soon!
