Steven Truscott case vs. Ann Marie MacDonald's The Way the Crow Flies

***EDIT*** Obviously, I didn't read the author's note in the novel. It is based on the Truscott case. Link.

I recently finished Ann Marie MacDonald's newest novel, The Way the Crow Flies. I thought it was a very good book. Entertaining, easy to read, and kept me on the edge of my seat.

A couple of days ago, I read about Stephen Truscott, who was convicted of raping and murdering a girl in 1959. He remains he is innocent and is trying to appeal right now. I started reading a little about the events of the Truscott case. MacDonald's book is eerily similar to this case. Both tells the story of a wrongfully accused murder (assuming Truscott is innocent). Here are some other similarities:

1. The setting of MacDonald's book is in Centralia, in Southwestern Ontario. The Truscott case happened in Clinton, which is also in Southwestern Ontario. The fictional town of Centralia is somewhere near Exeter, which is very near Clinton.

2. Both scenarios involved "dates" that were made up by girls (again, assuming Truscott is innocent).

3. Both scenarios involved a bicycle ride.

4. Both victims were raped and strangled.

5. Both victims had branches laid across the body.

6. Both cases had a mystery car that did not come forward.

There are many more little details... this made me think that MacDonald actually based her book on this case. I wonder if it's true.
