About Chase... it's interesting. When I first started watching House, he was the character I liked the least. But watching him evolve over eight seasons, I came to understand him better, and eventually love the character. It is my personal belief that out of all the fellows that worked under House, Chase had the clearest arc of character development. s1, s3 and s8 were good seasons for Chase--where it was apparent what endgame the writers were pushing for Chase--that he will likely end up House's successor.

It is true that often Chase has been pushed to the wayside--s4, s5, obviously, and s7 was very bad in the way it treated Chase (in fact, it was very bad in the way it treated EVERY character on the show). I think the increased focus on Chase in s8 was to compensate for a very weak s7. But taken as a whole, it's very obvious that Chase has grown tremendously as a man and as a doctor.

About Chase often being the butt of jokes--I've always taken that to mean that he was House's favourite. Think about the orange hair--it's House's way of showing affection. :p Look at the way he's with Wilson!

Casey reacts promptly and effectively in crisis, needing to distance himself. It seems though that he does it in most aspects of his life

That's a good point. I think it explains the way he dealt with Cruz--he knew Cruz needed a reality check, a way to get back on track. But he wasn't able to provide anything more than that, and Cruz now is really in need of help.
