It looks like Jesse Spencer has a Type.

A bit of Casey meta (which took its origins from an interesting tweet from Jesse Spencer) that I'm cross-posting from my Tumblr.

I started watching Chicago Fire because of Jesse Spencer. Even when I wasn’t terribly impressed by the first two episodes, I continued watching because I’d been so taken with Spencer’s portrayal of Chase and the ( Read more... )

I am so glad you posted it here! I love the comparison. It brings a deeper understanding of Casey.
I think, as you stated in the last part, that what Spencer was referring to where the motivations, Casey´s character seems to be driven by. doing what´s right, his definition of right of course is tinted by his life and beliefs, maybe he thinks what is right is to defend family and friends no matter what.
I loved Chase, but it may have been more for Jesse Spencer being the actor playing him. because the writers were kind of grey and fickle with his personality, IMO. Besides I don´t like a character being made fun of too much, and he was the writers focus for a lot of jokes (or sarcastic comments?) that I didn´t like.

You put in words something that I was trying to get, the difference in connecting with people the two have, Chase was very empathic, he read people and had a clear understanding of motivations. I loved that. And Casey seems a bit off, disconnected even.
But they both developed the skills necessary to survive. Casey reacts promptly and effectively in crisis, needing to distance himself. It seems though that he does it in most aspects of his life. I am eager to see what else they are throwing to the character.
I do hope the writers like Matthew Casey enough to give him a solid story and a consistent personality, with all the greys and blacks and whites, but a coherent one.

So thank you for posting this here and give me the chance of comment a bit!
Looking forward for more.

You're welcome! Thanks for commenting. :)

About Chase... it's interesting. When I first started watching House, he was the character I liked the least. But watching him evolve over eight seasons, I came to understand him better, and eventually love the character. It is my personal belief that out of all the fellows that worked under House, Chase had the clearest arc of character development. s1, s3 and s8 were good seasons for Chase--where it was apparent what endgame the writers were pushing for Chase--that he will likely end up House's successor.

It is true that often Chase has been pushed to the wayside--s4, s5, obviously, and s7 was very bad in the way it treated Chase (in fact, it was very bad in the way it treated EVERY character on the show). I think the increased focus on Chase in s8 was to compensate for a very weak s7. But taken as a whole, it's very obvious that Chase has grown tremendously as a man and as a doctor.

About Chase often being the butt of jokes--I've always taken that to mean that he was House's favourite. Think about the orange hair--it's House's way of showing affection. :p Look at the way he's with Wilson!

Casey reacts promptly and effectively in crisis, needing to distance himself. It seems though that he does it in most aspects of his life

That's a good point. I think it explains the way he dealt with Cruz--he knew Cruz needed a reality check, a way to get back on track. But he wasn't able to provide anything more than that, and Cruz now is really in need of help.

Thanks again for commenting! I hope to contribute much more to this fandom. :)
