I just got back to Virginia after a successful and exciting trip to
California. Family tension due to being gathered together was
alleviated, though not all together avoided, by getting two hotel
rooms, one for Mom and Steve and one for us girls. Steve decided to
stay an extra day before heading to Las Vegas (for business, though he
was a VIP at this conference and got a dope pad to stay in. LUCKY) so
that he could go to the beach with us. My general attitude the whole
trip was judgemental and relatively know-it-all, but I wasn't as
annoying as I usually am while on family trips. I guess I'm growing up!
Anyway, we flew in on Friday, headed to my brother John's place in
Duarte for Chinese/hanging out. Slept amazingly well on the most
comfortable bed I have ever had the pleasure to experience.
Got up Saturday for my cousin Michelle's wedding. Stopped over at my
uncle Gordon's to say hey, ate a plum from a tree in their backyard,
headed back to the hotel to shower and get ready. There was tons and
tons of traffic on the way to the church in Newport because it was a
gorgeous Saturday and everyone was headed to the beach. We, sadly, were
headed to a church (barf) for a catholic (double barf) wedding
(pretty!). The ceremony was long, lots of readings and kneeling and
eating of Jesus flakes. I partook of none of that nonsense. Instead, I
sat there feeling like an evil sin-laden spy who had infiltrated this
special club where everyone knew the right words to say and the right
hand signals to do at the exact same moment. It was pretty, but I'm
glad I don't believe in god. Gordon is an athiest but my aunt
Lucy is Catholic and insisted they raise their 4 (!!!) kids Catholic,
so that must have been pretty annoying every day, considering that they
are all actually Catholic. Anyway, Michelle looked magnificent and her
dress was simply gorgeous. She told me later that it was her mom's and
that she only altered it by removing the sleeves. It was so pretty that
I am thinking of copying it. Also, my cousin Kelly who hopes to become
a professional opera singer, sang throughout. She is amaaaaazing.
It was so great to see all of my California aunts and uncles and
cousins who we never get to see. I am even friends with my two cousin's
closest to me in age (besides Michelle, who is only 23!) Dianna and
Torey on facebook. Trippy!
The reception was pretty fab also. The food was amazing and there was
an open bar. There was also a really attractive guy who made eyes with
me for hours. I think he was with some woman though. And besides, he
was wearing loafers and no socks. Ew.
On Sunday we went to Huntington Beach with John and Trish and my nephew
Joshy, who is pretty much insane. He is 5 and hilarious. The water was
too frigid for me to actually go in, but of course my mom ran on in
there like the Cali girl she is. Damn hippies. I just laid out or went
walking with my sisters. I tried to stay protected because I've
promised myself that I'll start taking better care of my skin. I've
been burned so badly so many times that I'm scared of what I will look
like in a few years, what with all the wrinkles and cancer.
Nevertheless, I got all sorts of weird shaped sunburns, including a
jaggedy part on my arm and a "slice of watermelon" on my ass.
I got a snow cone which is all I ever really want, so this was a really excellent day.
We went to Fridays afterwards; the service sucked and though my steak
was cooked perfectly, it was only mediocre. I didn't like the fact that
I told them I wanted my meat medium rare and it came out rare. I
disliked this because I usually order my meat rare, but I knew that
they'd do it wrong and not cook it the right way, so I had to adjust my
order so the idiots could get it right unknowingly.
On Monday we went to the second greatest place in the whole wide world,
DISNEYLAND (The first greatest is, of course, DISNEYWORLD). It was
crowded as heck but so worth it. I love it there. I wish I could live
at Disneyland. I am not joking. It is so magical and charming. Oooooh I
wish I were there right this minute. My only complaint is that Space
Mountain was closed down for renovations. It's opening again in July
and it looks as if it's going to be awesome. Darn! Oh, another
complaint is that the price of food is totally insane. I felt so so so
guilty about eating anything, even though my mom kept getting mad at us
for constantly freaking out about it. Last complaint is all the idiots
with strollers. Actually, the strollers wouldn't be so bad in they
weren't filled with infants. Why would you bring a tiny baby to
Disneyland? Because you're an idiot, that's why. The first trip to
Disneyland that I actually remember did not happen until I could
actually walk and talk.
To make up for all the complaints, here's a list of awesomeness: JUNGLE
CRUISE, PIRATES, HAUNTED MANSION, PRINCESSES, CHURROS, MATERHORN,
SPLASH MOUNTAIN (which I got totally soaked on, which is rare and
awesome), INDIANA JONES, STORYBOOK BOAT THING (The best
ride EVER), PRINCESSES, SMALL WORLD, ALICE ON WONDERLAND ( = me),
FIREWORKS!, IMAGINATION AT IT'S FINEST, etc etc.
On Tuesday we went to this place called the "Lab," the "anti-mall" or
something like that. It was just a grouping of pretty cool stores
trying to be cooler than they actually were. Whatev, I dig that shit, I
cannot lie. I got some really cute clothes at Urban Outfitters. Then my
"partner in crime," Mahrya came by and whisked me off to Hollywood. Saw
her new apartment and met her fiance John, who was adorable and looks
like her. I always worry about her and those boys, and I was so hoping
that John was actually as great as she said he was. Thankfully, they
seem very happy and compatible, he treats her well and is able to
handle all of the stuff that comes along with the Mahrya package. I
loved him, absolutely approve of him. Yay!
We walked to In'N'Out, which has the best burgers ever. On the way back
we saw all these limos and people all dressed up (rather ghetto-fab,
natch) and we all tried to figure out what was going on. Mahrya lives
right down the street from that Chinese theatre, right in the heart of
Hollywood, so it was obviously some sort of event or premiere. Mahrya
guessed that it was the BET awards and she was absolutely correct.
Awesome!
We hung around and talked, then headed to Amoeba, the BEST RECORD STORE
ON EARTH. They have absolutely everything, imports, vinyl, rare and
hard to find items new and used. I sound like an advertisement, but
really it is truly phenomenal. They have stores in LA, San Fran and
Berkeley, so if you are ever in those areas, check it out. I find that
it is terribly difficult to go on there without an agenda, so I like to
bring a list. Other people can just browse but I get overwhelmed by the
literal millions of albums. The staff is also fantastic at recommending music.
Obviously I love this place, and the fact that Mahrya can walk there
makes me blindingly jealous. I dream about working there.
I didn't buy anything because I didn't have a list. Damn.
Drove up to the hills to feed Mahrya's friend Brigid's cat, drove back
to her place, got Brazillian food, ate and watched Friends dvds until
the wee hours of the morn. I slept on a comfy futon. Imagine that. We
spent the next day lounging around being our stupid selves and talking
talking.
Tired for now, so I guess
