Polgara's apartment, Sunday evening

Sep 10, 2006 20:18

Wrapped in a trailing blue robe of silk, Polgara moved around her apartment with a soft, pleased smile on her face. She moved into her spotless kitchen and set the water to boil for a nice cup of tea and considered slipping down to another apartment for the night . . .

Rose wasn't at home and Maia needed someone to talk to. Taking a breath she knocked on Polgara's door, her wand was tucked away in her pocket.

Polgara was at the door in a second, doing her best not to wrench it open. Her face fell faintly when she didn't see a familiar dark head, but perked right up again into a genuine smile.

"Maia," she said warmly, stepping backwards to allow her in.

"Hey." She said with a nervous smile as she stepped through the doorway, her fingers tight around the wand. "I'm not bothering you am I?" She said with a quick glance around.

Polgara shook her head. "Oh no, dear, not at all. I was just about to have a cup of tea, would you like to join me?"

Maia nodded and relaxed a little. "I wanted to ask you something...if you don't mind."

"Ask away," Polgara said with a smile as she swept back into the kitchen. "I may even give you an answer."

"Did you know I was...well that I could do magic when you met me?" She said looking up at Polgara, for an instant she felt very small, like a child of eight instead of a woman of twenty-four.

"I know very little about magic," Polgara said levelly, fetching a second cup. "And my brief probe of your mind was not to gauge ability. You haven't made any noise, if that's what you mean."

Maia looked slightly afronted. "You probed me?" She almost sounded scandelized.

"When we first met, dear, don't you remember?" Polgara smiled at her apologetically. "You were quite upset with me."

Maia remembered and then blushed, "I- I'm sorry. I had forgotten." She said chewing her lip now looking at Polgara. "Does it register if you look for it now?" She said in a soft voice.

"Perhaps."

Polgara began pouring the tea. "Magic is a very different creature than my brand of sorcery, dear," she continued. "But I can look. Why?"

Maia sat down, "I can do things now...that I couldn't do before...I can..." She hesitated and then started to speak, "I can do things..." She finished unsure if she sounded insane or not.

"What sort of things, dear?" Polgara asked, setting the cup of tea down before her and sitting herself. She believed her completely.

Maia pulled her wand from her pocket and laid it on the table between them. It gleamed in the light, almost humming when her fingers touched it.

"I can set things on fire, make things float...I got water to come out earlier and put the fire out." She said feeling like this was nothing compared to what she knew Polgara could do with a flick of her hand.

Polgara looked curiously at the shaft of wood. "What's this?" she asked, tilting her head.
