Title: only when what we want is not a compromise
Author: duchessofavalon
Fandom: Bones
Characters: Michael Hodgins, Christine Brennan-Booth
Rating: PG-13ish?
Summary: 'It’s entirely possible that she’s enjoying this more than she should, but she can’t help being amused that her male best friend is apparently a secret prude.'
Author's Notes: Soooo yeah. I wrote this a really long time ago and have finally declared it good enough to be posted. I don't know, I just really like writing next-gen stuff okay? (Also, sorry for the fic dump tonight-- I promise I will post REAL THINGS again soon!) This is sort of pointless, but there will probably be more bits that follow it.

It’s pretty much inevitable that they grow up best friends.

Which is why Christine thinks it’s an absolutely brilliant idea to get this virginity thing out of the way with Michael.

“You have lost what little sanity you ever had to begin with.”

One of his hands is messing with his dark curls and Christine just wants to swat at it and make him stop, because he’s starting to look like a victim of a perm gone wrong. She’s perched on the end of his bed, legs crossed Indian-style beneath her, blue eyes staring at him like she thinks he’s the one who’s crazy.

“Why? It’s the logical solution to my problem.”

“What problem, C?”

“I’m a virgin,” she deadpans. “Have you not been listening?”

Michael makes a noise in the back of his throat that sounds kind of like an angry cat.

“Why is this flustering you so much? You’ve had sex. You and Maggie had sex all the time when you guys were dating last year.”

It’s entirely possible that she’s enjoying this more than she should, but she can’t help being amused that her male best friend is apparently a secret prude.

“Why do you think that this is a problem?” he asks finally, throwing his hands up in the air. “It’s not like you’re the only virgin in the world.”

“According to the general populous of our high school, virginity is a problem,” she says with a casual shrug, like she’s discussing nothing more important than the weather. “Besides, I’m going to have to get it over with one day anyway. Might as well be with someone that I trust.” It seems reasonable enough to Christine.

Michael apparently doesn’t see it that way.

“You can’t just walk into a guy’s room and tell him he should have sex with you. That’s not how it works, C.”

Christine rolls her eyes. “Mike, if you don’t want to have sex with me, just say so. I’m not gonna like, cry.” She looks disturbed at the very idea.

Before Michael can answer, though, his little sister Ruby comes running into his room full-speed.

“Dinner’s ready!” the six-year-old announces loudly before running right back out. Christine merely shakes her head. Ruby is adorable, but spending too much time around her makes Christine glad that her only sibling is ten years older.

“We should go eat,” Michael says, pointing at the door.

She sighs, hopping up from the bed and kicking his shin as she walks past. “Don’t get all weird about this.”

“Nothing to be weird about. It’s not gonna happen.”

***

It does happen.

***

Their parents get called out of town on a case, Christine’s home alone, Michael comes over to watch really horrible 90s movies, and it just sort of...happens.

Christine’s not sure what the fuss was about, honestly.

When she tells Michael this, though, he gets offended and pushes her out of her own bed before turning Clueless back on, backing it up to the last part they both remember seeing.

If they watch the rest of the movie naked, well. It’s not like it’s weird anymore.

***

And if it happens a few more times after that it’s not a big deal.

Christine’s glad she’s more mature than the average sixteen year old girl, though. Otherwise it probably would be a big deal.

But she is. And it’s not.
