Wow! I really wasn't expecting the depth of this project.. I've given up embroidering the body of the dress for this weekend. I still have another 30 odd buttons to sew on and about 100 button holes to sew. Why do I feel the need to do it by hand? Argh... The belt took alot longer than I expected. Not great, but not bad for a first attempt and I did learn a few things along the way.
1) Size the mounts to the belt, not the belt to the mounts. None of my buckes fit, so I had to make a new one and the belt is wider than I wanted it to be.
2) Make the rivet shaft narrower, easier to peen down.
3) A jeweler's file stabs pretty deep. And the blood is a bright red and frightens children.
4) Two in the morning is not the time to hammer on things. At least I didn't seem to bother the neighbors. (I hope)
5) Punching holes and clipping pewter takes a lot of hand strength.
6) Pewter is hot. (But I new that one already)
7) The new pewter pot rocks. Though not period, the amount of waste is much less than the hot coal method (been there, done that). And I can crank out buttons like nobody's business. And I don't have an open flame in the basement, and I'm not in the garage.
I'm sure I learned more, but lack of sleep makes me punchy. Off to sew buttons and button holes. Oh, and hem the skirt.... Where did I put the IV for the caffeine?
