My new apartment is a bit chilly. As such, I've been looking into space heaters. I ran across these instructions for finding the right space heater and using it properly. I couldn't help but notice that this is pretty much the same advice that applies to dating:
- Select a space heater with a guard around the flame area or the heating element.
- Buy a heater that is the correct size for the area you want to heat.
- When selecting a heater, look for one that has been tested and certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
- Read and follow the manufacturer’s operating instructions.
- Broken heaters should be checked and repaired by a qualified appliance service center. Do not attempt to repair, adjust, or replace parts in the heater yourself.
- Be sure the plug fits snugly in the outlet.
- Some heaters have very hot surfaces. Be sure to keep children and pets away from space heaters.
- Never leave a space heater turned on when you go to sleep or leave the area.
- Be aware that mobile homes require specially designed space heaters.
- While it should be noted that some heater models may pose a fire hazard, many provide clean and efficient draft-free heat that feels just like warmth from the sun, and are safe and easy to maintain.
