Where On Earth: Episode V - The E.S.B.

Jun 22, 2007 09:21

Last weekend I learned from the Czech that they are the most beer-drinking-est people in Europe.  I later learned from Google that means they are the most beer-drinking-est people on Earth, with a whopping 167L of beer annually consumed per capita.  Not surprisingly, the Czech also attempted to convince me that a pint a day (the national average) keeps the doctor away.  Chock full of Vitamin-B, it turns out "pilsner" is Czech for "apple juice."1

And with that said, I'm mixing it up a little this week...

The WTF? Edition

Today I am in a city that (surprise!) contains yet another World Heritage Site.
I didn't know that when I originally set out to plan this trip.  But I should have surmised there would be.  I am in a place for which at least 90% of the world needs no introduction.

Incredibly diverse, this destination has been highly regarded for welcoming people throughout the world with open arms.  Approximately 170 languages are spoken in this city.  With a booming economy that is home to several of the largest multi-national corporations on Earth, trends here are closely watched by global markets.  But all is not entirely kosher in this economic eden.  A recent survey found the average disparity of annual income between the richest and the poorest neighborhoods here amounted to almost 135K€ ($180,000).

Public transit here is second to none and combined with its many pedestrian commuters and nearly 120,000 daily cyclists, this city is purportedly one of the most energy-efficient in its nation.  The city moves so many commuters each day that it's no surprise its inaugural sister city was Tokyo, Japan.  This city has since collected a number of other siblings including Beijing, Cairo, Budapest, and Johannesburg.

There are so many examples of world-class events, sports teams, and culture here that I couldn't possibly pick a single one of them to list that wouldn't spell out the name in big bold letters that outshine the Bright Lights in this Big City.  Except maybe I can mention that a very popular energy drink just gave the local Soccer team "wings."
