I totally understand what you mean about portion sizes, especially at restaurants. They're huge. At one point, I had gotten into the unhealthy habit of eating as much as I possibly could when I went out to eat, whether or not I was terribly hungry. I did this partially because it was right there in front of me (though there were some other reasons too), and because I was looking at it and because I hadn't "finished" it, I'd habitually keep eating, despite knowing that most restaurant-sized "meals" are enough food to feed me for at least 2 meals, if not 3.

I realized this was a problem, but didn't want to stop going out to eat, so I found a solution. When I got my meal, I'd cut it in half. Literally. I'd take my knife and split the chicken breast, steak, huge cheeseburger (this was back when I could eat cheese), whatever, right down the center, and then I'd push one half to the back of my plate. Both the action of putting it aside and the visual effect of having it set apart from the rest of the meal acted as checks for me: it was a way of starting out by saying, "This is what I'll eat, and that is what I'll take home". Sometimes I'd dip into the "take home" portion, but only if I decided I really was still hungry after finishing the rest. It's possible to do this with side dishes, too.

So, if you do go out to eat from time to time, that's something to try. Hopefully it will help.

I've done this before actually. You can also order lunch sized portions for dinner. You pay the dinner price but at least you're not gaining weight.
