Pikeman's Pleasure

It was a fabulous weekend. We stayed over Friday night at Helen’s cottage, Windsong, which was as gorgeous as its name. Piers remarked that it was probably my idea of a cottage because it had a dishwasher & a washing machine and a T.V. It actually reminded me of a few retreat centres I’ve stayed at - lots of bedrooms, a few common rooms, and ( Read more... )

illumination, costuming, archery, events

The only thing that made it worse was you-know-who. He looked through all the scores and kept commenting on how badly I was doing and how he was "not the one who sucked the most". In the end, I finished last and he finished second last.

OMG, who *is* this prick?
Being military, even being young and male, isn't an excuse for being a rude SOB. Lots of Tor Brant members are young, male and military, and they are anything but rude.

It *is* possible it's an attempt at a male pre-emptive critique thing that typically works in his usual social circle. The required response is 'nope, I still suck more, you'll have to keep trying harder, you're clearly out of practice' or something similar.

But if you're like me, (someone who usually says what she means, rather than BS-ing) it's a puzzling practice.

If he's Thuligan-local, I'd put a small word in Dafydd's ear. He's a trustworthy soul, and has the local authority (as archer, and old phart) to tell young pup to smarten up and be more pleasant.

The pink dress, if it's the one w/ side laces and long sleeves (1 w/ a rip in it) was an attempt at a side-laced bliaut. :-)

I still believe the side lacing is accurate (I now do a spiral lace, rather than a x-cross one) but think to get the look right it needs fairly heavy drapey fabric to work.

Lining the sleeves, and/or decorating them w/ a contrasting facing, would hide the rip. :-) A decorative keyhole facing would also accentuate the bliaut look more.

Tempus' scroll sounds wonderful - is this Liadin the herald, tall large lady w/ light red hair and lovely voice? If it is, I'm so delighted she's scribing!

I'm sooo glad to hear of Keja's vigil. I've been rooting for her for years!

Thank you for such an informative report on one of my favourite events. :-)

That would be the pink Norman dress in question. Someone was talking about bliauts and I asked what exactly differentiated one from other Norman dresses. Dame Helen said mine was a bliaut. Someone else said that to be a bliaut it needed gathering at the waist. I personally glad you didn't do that because, while it worked on Domhnail's body, I personally do not need extra material or extra attention at my midsection.

It was the first time I've worn the dress since Pennsic 2004. I love it, but I used to lend out my garb to my youth group for medieval (or LOTR) parties. Jordan who is about 5 foot 7 and weighs 105 pounds and has the ehteral look and colouring of Arwen Evenstar fell in love the dress. After seeing her in it about 3 times, I always felt short and fat in it. (Moral of the story - do not lend your clothes out to anyone more attractive that you are. YOu may not feel good in them when you get them back.) :)

That is a good description of Liadin. She was the court herald for Edouard and Domhnail at the event. She was doing all kinds of silly things to Kristinia (Perveval's wife) at feast. I was trying to figure out what was wrong with her until she told me that she is their chamberlain and is good friends with her in real life. Then it made perfect sense. She seems like a really cool and fun person, as well as a talented illumination artist.

When Keja was put on notice, she got a standing ovation. I've seen other people been invited to join peerage orders before, but I think it was the first itme I've seen someone get a standing ovation. Anne Tinker was almost as thrilled as Keja herself.

I forgot to mention that one of the cool things about the day was the theme. Pikeman's always does the best themes. Being a Crusade theme, you were randomly assigned to 4 teams (King's, Queen's, Baron's, and Hermit's.) You got points based on various competitions. Apparently, although the Hermits cleaned up with marshal points (we had Robert Guerin on our team), it was the King's team that won the day. Every member of the team (includinb Piers) got a prize which truned out to be a leather awl.
