[ Personality ] :

If you were asked to summarize Maya in one word, it'd definitely be positive! From her favorite English catchphrase (which, hilarious enough, tends to come out as "Let's Positive Thinking!" instead of "Let's Think Positive!"), to her very manner of carrying herself, Maya is a cheerful, bright, upbeat young woman. A reporter for a teen magazine called "Coolest," she thoroughly enjoys her job (almost as much as she enjoys hunting down the gossip it entails), and loves writing. She's a savvy, quick-witted, spunky woman. If you want sauce and flair, then look no further! She's always trying her best to help others, and to help herself. Maya is a very giving, very caring person; she almost never puts herself before someone else, as long as another is involved.

Maya has a bit of a fascination with poetry and quotes, especially French and German works, such as Der Doppelgänger, which is a poem and main theme to the story. Oftentimes, she'll quote poetry, literature, or even music lyrics that remind her of certain situations. Seeing as she's a reporter, it's hardly surprising, but Maya is a well-cultured woman who dabbles into more than mere celebrities and teen gossip.

Intelligent AND beautiful, if not a bit gung-ho, Maya has a knack for puzzle-solving and a thirst (a craving, almost) for knowledge. If there's a riddle? She'll seek to solve it! Got a puzzle? Let her take a crack at it! Is there an unsolved mystery? She's your girl! If anything, Maya is definitely bubbly and eternally curious about everything and the story behind it; perhaps it's simply a reporter's nature, seeing as she usually sniffs out a scoop from miles away. That said, Maya isn't that simplistic a girl. To her, it really isn't just about the latest scoop and that adorable top--it's about what the top represents, why, and if it will help her friends.

Her friends are possibly one of the most important things in the world to her, and she would be willing to do anything for them, be that throwing herself in the way of peril for their sake just so they could get away, or fighting demons tooth and nail, Maya will always fight to protect those she cares for. And boy, can she! Her original Persona, Maia, is light, healing, and ice-based, which should say quite a bit. Like the other Sumaru kids, Maya is able to use multiple Personae, though her original Persona (Maia) and her ultimate Persona (Artemis) were always her preferred method of fighting, aside from, of course, her pistols.

... A reporter? With pistols? It's more likely than you think! Apparently, she's not only an ace reporter, but also a top-notch marksman. (Or would that be markswoman?) Her two pink pistols pack quite a punch, and she's definitely not afraid to use them or her Personae.

Although Maya can fight, she'd much prefer to talk things out first. As evidenced even during her introduction, Maya rather dislikes arguing and fighting, always acting as the voice of reason on the team, often pointing out the good in a bad situation, or between Eikichi Mishina and Lisa Silverman, pointing out the helpfulness of the other when they argue with one another. Maya finds the two to be cute, in a sense; it wouldn't really be all that surprising if she actually thought they'd be better off as an actual couple than arguing like cats and dogs. Never one to think negatively, Maya is always there to show the group the brighter side of things, as well as help take charge even in the most hopeless and confusing of situations.

Maya has a tendency to joke around quite often, usually in an attempt to distract people and stop them fight fighting or arguing (Lisa and Eikichi), or just to lighten the mood. She's usually very playful, sometimes even a bit flirty, but never with the intention of attracting anyone. It's hinted at that she's quite a good actor when she's hunting for a scoop or trying to get interviews; Maya herself says that she's sometimes a quiet interviewer, and at other times, a hot-blooded reporter. Which is exactly what she is--nothing excites Maya more than the chance at a once in a lifetime scoop or story, and she just loves to get there first.

Although this may all make her sound a bit shallow, she's really anything but. Maya would never publish something that would hurt someone else, and she has her own sort of moral 'code' she follows that goes along the same line of reasoning. It isn't that she hates fighting, it's simply that, in reality, Maya will only truly ever fight if her life or the lives of her friends or innocents are endangered. For example, she'll always fight against the demons trying to kill the party, but never attack the ones that come up and talk to them. And on occasion, she's spoken to a great number of said demons herself in order to acquire Tarot cards for Tatsuya to use in the Velvet Room.

When Maya was very young, her father, a reporter, went away overseas and never came back. Maya created a good luck charm for him--a bunny she calls Ms. Bunny--and he took it with him. Unfortunately, Ms. Bunny was all that returned; her father never came back like he promised. During a scene in the final dungeon, this is shown to affect Maya quite deeply. In fact, despite it just being a memory, she cries out for her father not to go because she wasn't "that good of a girl", which proves that Maya does, in fact, have quite a few sad parts in her life. His parting words to her when she cried as a small girl were not to cry, or "Ms. Bunny will laugh at you". This, of course, hardly helped. She promised herself she'd become a reporter who could help make dreams come true, as well as do what her father never managed: balance her family life and her career. Though she's still single and living with just her friend, of course, and openly has no interest in men at all, it's likely she still dreams of such.

On the subject of dreams, not long after her father died (a few years later), at the same shrine in Sumaru city where she's last seen with him before he leaves, she met the party as children, all wearing masks. They formed a small group and always played together anonymously at the shrine, worry-free from bullying or anything else. There, Maya joined up with them, and became their big sister figure. It was then they all played the game called "Persona-sama," which would later allow Philemon to grant Maya her own Persona, and subsequently save her life. You see, Maya had to move away, sadly, and didn't want to leave them, so she didn't tell them until the day before she was supposed to leave. Unfortunately, Eikichi and Lisa thought locking her in the shrine, away from her family so they couldn't find her would mean she would stay there instead of moving, because then her family would have no choice but to let her stay. Of course, Tatsuya and Jun weren't happy with this idea, but she ended up inside Araya Shrine for the night.

Jun Kurosu wished Maya was his mother instead of his actual mother, would later be manipulated by Nyarlathotep into believing that Tatsuya and co. locked her in the shrine against her will and then figured they ought to "kill her," Tatsuya setting the shrine ablaze with his Persona, Volcanus, while a young Maya pounded on the locked door pleading for help. Jun's memories were warped and changed by him into making him think Maya had died because of this. When, in actuality, there HAD been a fire, but it hadn't been the fault of any of the kids. This would later lead to Jun giving up his Persona ability and becoming Joker-sama, a twisted genie who had been trying to kill the party for quite some time.

Maya would later get through to Jun due to her sheer stubborn will and trying to tell him she was, in fact, alive.

What had really happened was that the children (who'd taken to calling themselves the Masquerade at the time), after locking Maya inside the shrine, wouldn't expect that an insane arsonist by the name of Tatsuya Sudou would appear and set the shrine ablaze. Luckily, due to playing the "Persona-sama" game earlier, Maya's Persona activated and saved her from certain death. Tatsuya Suou helped her escape the blaze, but Sudou watched this, proclaiming Maya to be a "witch" and tried to kill her. Tatsuya's Persona then activated, setting Sudou ablaze himself, and burning him severely to the extent that his other eye was now melted completely away. Sudou fled, and Tatsuya and Maya were saved that night. Afterwards, Maya most likely moved away.

Because of this, Maya has always had a severe phobia of fire, causing flashbacks to that time. In times of crisis and need involving it, she starts to call out for her father in the hopes of being saved, just as she did that day. Maya has since overcome the phobia, since when the Air Museum in Sumaru city was set on fire (by Sudou who had returned, calling himself "King Leo"), and a young girl named Ixquic was trapped inside. Determined to save her from burning to death, Maya gets a rope, and after some close calls, she saves both Ixquic and herself.

Due to what happened, Maya probably forgot everything about their past, like the rest of the party--after going to Mount Iwato, they all remember, and it's shown just how much Maya really meant to them. Also how much she truly empathizes and cares for people; Maya would save a young girl from a burning building even though she hardly knew her. This says a lot about Maya's character, as wall as her maternal instincts. Maya always instinctually seems to act as a sort of teasing, but caring older sister figure to her friends and people younger than her. She's always looking out for others, but also herself.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, when she DOES fight demons or get into battle, Maya enthusiastically starts a fight with "whoop ass time!", sometimes even ending a battle with "whoop ass complete!", a huge grin on her face. Everything she does, she does with her all. She's a woman who always give it two hundred percent, no matter what, because if you're going to do something, then you'd better do it with your all! She's strong, compassionate, caring, and just a little sad. This side we see of Maya isn't one we see often simply because of how strong of heart she is, but it's obvious even though she no longer has a phobia of fire or the arsonist behind it now that she's recovered her memories, it still impacts her quite a bit. One of her biggest things is that, during Xibalba, Maya mentions that if people don't remember you, they may as well have not existed.

The irony of this is the very fact later that, when Maya is stabbed by Maya Okamura with the Longinus lance (a mythological lance which was brought to life by rumors and said to create a wound that would bleed forever--and it does), and her death fulfills the "Maiyan Oracle" based on a book by a delusional man called "In Laquetti," the party must forget ever meeting, becoming friends, and most of all, completely forget Maya herself. She dies telling them to forget her, and not to cry, because if anybody DOES cry, "Ms. Bunny's just gonna laugh at them". In the end, even when she's there, dying, surrounded by her friends, Maya thinks of them first, only wanting to see them smile.

She's content with her life. She died saving people, and all she really wanted was for them to smile. Really, her biggest regret has to have been the fact that, despite everything, Maya Okamura believed ending the world was worthwhile just to prove things for her unrequited love. This says quite a bit; Maya has always been the one to care deeply for others, and see the situation from every point of view, so if anything, she's upset that the world had to end simply because of her death, giving all those people no chance to make up for whatever 'bad' they'd done (because in her point of view, all people deserve a second chance), not that she had to die.

What she wants everyone to remember is that if anyone else is sad or cries too much, Ms. Bunny's just gonna have to laugh at them!

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :

Strengths
• She's emotionally a very strong woman and is always positive and hard to make sad for long.
• Her Personae are top-notch, high level, and she can use more than just Artemis.
• Magic! Her Personae can cast all sorts of spells, healing to elemental.
• Her Persona, Artemis, can tell her quite a bit about the nature of things--sensing things, people (like how it tells her that the party are "all good kids"), and objects, etc.
• She's unstoppable when she sets her mind to something.
• She can use pistols, and pretty well.
• She can smell a scoop from a mile away.
• With her friends by her side, she'll almost never be defeated.
• She's a really forgiving and caring, almost big sister, motherly kind of person.
• Maya will never hesitate to take charge of a situation and lead a group of people.
• Puzzle-solving! She's excellent at tracking hidden things, finding and deciphering clues, and sleuthing things out.
• Common sense (usually): she has quite a bit of practicality in her, and is willing to wait some things out if she even mildly suspects anything else and a peaceful solution presents itself.
• She usually knows the right quote, saying, or simply what to say in almost any situation to cheer people up.
• Computers (from her timeframe anyway): Maya is a reporter and a pretty high-tech girl, so she knows how to use them.

Weaknesses
• She has a hard time with fire due to what happened to her when she was young.
• She has a bit of a time when it comes to operating vehicles. In fact, she's almost positive to crash whatever she tries to drive spectacularly, but has deluded herself into believing just having a driver's license will be fine for even DRIVING A BLIMP.
• She's horrible when it comes to NOT gossiping sometimes.
• She has a tendency to charge into things without thinking or waiting for anyone else half the time, so long as she's certain of what the next step is.
• Her Persona ability can be 'disabled,' like with the fake Longinus lances that stop it from working.
• She has limited magic use.
• She's not exactly a military person--she can easily be hurt, if not for her Persona's protection from demons and the like making her more resilient to non-human things. So a firearm or anything else could seriously hurt her.
• She's just human! Normal woman in her early twenties who just happens to have a Persona. Her emotions can be a strength as well as a weakness, you know? A woman's heart isn't something to toy with.

[ Other Important Facts ] :

She's from, like... 1999. So, late 90s tech--anything super high-tech from later is going to be mind-blowing, probably, but not that hard to figure out.

She can speak French and possibly German (it's implied in how she randomly quotes German and French literature and poetry, which in general she has a fondness for), and knows a little bit of horrible English, apparently. Also, she's terrible at Rock, Paper, Scissors, since she apparently always chooses scissors. Oh, and Maya herself mentions even though she has no clue how to really PLAY Casino games, she somehow always wins them, so she's pretty lucky.

Maya also has a tendency to blurt out random Engrish English phrases, like "Let's Positive Thinking!" and the like. Though for all our sakes, I'll be auto correcting that to sound like it should be, even if it's too hilarious on it's own.

She's as messy as all hell with her room and cleaning, too--Maya openly states she had always meant to clean her horribly trashed up apartment, but never had the time to. ... Haha.

And uh, oh yeah! She's dead (and pretty much knows it and has no regrets). Which means she's from before Philemon resets everything and creates the Eternal Punishment proceedings, so she won't remember her time from the second game with Katsuya, Baofu, or Ulala, but will however remember the entirety of Innocent Sin.

[ The camera feed clicks on, and a cheery, beautiful young woman appears on it, smiling. ]

Ciao, everyone! ♥ I'm Maya Amano, a reporter for the best-selling magazine, Coolest! Got any stories? Bring them here, and I'll be happy to write it out and interview you guys!

Although I have to say that my first instinct as a reporter is to dig up the dirt on this place... unless this happens to be a really aquatic afterlife, in which case, I guess there wouldn't be any dirt to dig up, huh? Just sand, probably. But you know, I like to hope otherwise--after all, "Let's Think Positive!"

[ A pause, and a laugh. ] Anyway, I was wondering if you guys could tell me: what's the story with this place? I bet you get this with new arrivals all the time, but I have to say that when I imagined heaven, I thought of a bright light and... I don't know, maybe some giant gates! And some adorable little angels, or something. This sure isn't what I pictured--my clothes are ruined, and my make-up's kind of runny!

[ There's another short pause where she ascertains the state of her face from the reflection of the SFC, and then sighs to herself. ]

This is pretty terrible, actually... maybe I should actually be asking where I can get some good lipstick first...? I'm freezing, not to mention soaked.

[ She rubs the bridge of her nose slightly, and the feed cuts. ]

[ Questions? Comments? Concerns? ] : I'll be having her use honorifics and stuff, since she's Japanese, even though the translation script I'm playing the game on doesn't use them (another script I read does, so I'll be using that for reference). Tired of me yet?
