VVC 2006 Vid Comments
So I may have grounded myself from certain activities (ok *one* activity--but I really like it!) that I like in order to make sure I got this done. And yet, it has still taken me well past the couple of days I'd hoped such drastic measures would assure. On the bright side at least I've gotten more work-work done in the last couple of weeks than in the last...well. No need to incriminate myself *too* much.
I've commented on what I think is everything that premiered at VVC sorted by vidshow. No links to vids since they've already been collected by *wonderful* people at vividcon. The main list can be found here. With the exception of Club Vivid premieres which are linked to as I could find them.

I really like how this opens with such an emphasis on the action and by the end has collected such an effective emotional punch. Not that it ever stops with the action. :D Frenetic sense of motion in certain sections and some fantastic parallels. The kind that have real weight behind them, not just visual similarities. This vid does not dawdle anywhere, and I think it rewards rewatching handsomely. I missed in the NN show but got to see it at room parties and a few times now at home. Each time I find new things to enjoy.
The Church of What's Happening Now by f1renze
Such a beautiful vid. Not a light kind of pretty, but enduring. Just like it's main character comes across to me (having never seen the movie). The shot of the bloody bathtub always hits me hard. And yet I've been known to rewind that section so that I can appreciate it over again. ;) Yeah ok, so I like angst. But this is has angst with a gorgeous and strong undercurrent of hope.
The Battle of Evermore by keerawa
I know enough of HL to barely get by, so I'm sure some of the intricacies of this vid went over my head. I do think the repeated motif of the Four Horsemen did a lot to create a sense of cohesiveness, along with fitting the tone of the music. There a few places where the literal visual connect to the lyrics didn't feel quite as natural to me as others, but again, it could be because of my unfamiliarity with the context. My favorite section of the vid is the last quarter or so--the flashes of the three of them interspersed with Duncan and his practice. It not only showed that the three of them had come pretty far from their beginnings in the vid, but the repeated structured swordplay was a nice compliment to the chaos of the Horsemen.

I adore the subtle black humor in this vid. It's what makes the combination of source and song work so well for me. It's also disturbing by turns (or large swaths ;D) as it should be. Excellent pacing and motion and use of color. The first time I saw it felt a little flat, but having rewatched it a few times now, I'm pretty sure that was largely caused by the washed out colors on the poorer of the two VVC projectors. Love the jump cuts. And how this vid feels so *fun*, even though my brain is back there trying to tell me that reveling in carnage and fucked-upedness is just plain wrong. :P

I love this vid and I've never seen a second of the show. Although this vid also makes me want to correct that! It's clearly gloriously fucked up (or at least Leary's character's life is). And this vid revels in that until the very end when it sneaks up behind me and knifes me in the back with the full weight of badness that even the fucked up stuff that came before did nothing to prepare me for.

OMG NEO! I've never seen St. Elmo's Fire, so as far as I'm concerned this song was written because someday Neo would exist. Srsly. ("Tryin' to break free!" OMG!) (Ooo-oo-oo-oooo!) The walking! The crawling! The punching! OMG I love this vid with the burning of a thousand golden Neos. Is it any wonder I felt the need to pay homage to it in my own LKBV?

God Says Nothing Back by morgandawn
This is a Sam vid, but it also encompasses a lot of the universe that surrounds him. The demons, the fear, the death, and of course the love. I really enjoy that feeling of place. Of laying out so strongly where he lives, both physically and emotionally. And there are some great added notes of color with the lightning and the blood drop (the continued motion of which I *love*). I'm not sold on all of the blur/glows, but most of those work well for me too. Really like the ones on Sam and John in the middle of the vid. And the car overlay on the sky! So so pretty and effective. The end is also lovely. Fantastic use of environment and object imagery to set and hold onto the mood.

Wow, Life On Mars looks amazing in vids. Although I may be biased by only have seen fabulous vids to it. ;D I had no idea that the song for this was recent. No clue. It fit the 70s look of the show perfectly. And it just sweeps me along for the ride. Between the motion, the pacing, and the utter coolness, I'm too busy enjoying myself to stop and think critically about it. :)

This may not be how I usually think of Roslin, but it showcases quite effectively just how much heartbreak she's been through. And then, in the end, leaves us with a hopeful and really beautiful end note. It has lovely imagery spread throughout, but I seriously love the last shot of Laura's smile fading into the nebula.

I'm currently not quite halfway through season 3 of Farscape. So I think I know the context for a lot of this vid, but not quite all. It's a gorgeous vid. Complex, visually stunning, and it's already enhancing my view of the source material. Beautiful and masterful use of every kind of visual the show provides.

I *need* to see Carnivale after watching this. The first half lures me in, and the second that cat hits its feet I get chills that last the rest of the vid. The imagery in it hits me a level that really doesn't require context. It's beautifully creepy.

The titling on this one was a bit hard to read, sometimes because it went by really quickly, and other times because it was placed in odd areas. I did like how the vid title itself came in, but it could have been a touch slower too. It's a fun even to someone who doesn't watch SGA. (Me.) I also thought it was a neat idea for the scientist focus. It's been mentioned a few times now, but it would be a good dance vid. Maybe a touch long in a non dance setting. Snappy cutting.

Heartbreaking. I'd seen it a few times before the Premiere's show and never actually gotten physically teary. But something about seeing on the big screen even had my normally dry eyes wibbling by the end. I love how the sense of tragedy is there from the beginning of the vid, but it hangs in the periphery for a while before finally staring you in the face and refusing to let you look away. It sneaks up on you even though you know exactly what's coming. And it's gorgeous. Beautiful use of symbolic imagery aside from the characters themselves.

This got me more interested in Bones than watching the first couple of episodes from the show did. The song also struck me as a apt choice for what I saw of the title character. It's a vid I think I might have gotten more from if I knew the material better, but it was definitely intriguing.

Her. First. Vid. Ever. *Dude.* Love the creepy song and the very tight narrative. The use of Sam's visions also makes the vid feel that much tighter because it lends a nice sense of visual connection. "Whoop!" Eeee! Love that part. So perfect. Also really enjoyed the section focusing on his and Dean's relationship to add that extra weight to his vision of Dean dying. Great jump cuts as well. Great SPN vid for people who aren't familiar with the show. The mood just sucks you right in.

Guh. So damn sexy. Sexy song, sexy source, sexy damn editing. Everything with killa's name on it has reaction shots to die for and then this has the added glow of Flo's amazing sense of timing. And both of them working on another Angel vid? Double Guh. Plus awesome credits! And the internal motion timing--::melts:: And Spike and Angel and just, no really, I love this. That hug? Where they rock back and forth? Makes me happy in a way I'm not even sure I can verbalize. Right along with "sweetness and light".

Ok, so I was in the group of people who hadn't ever seen the original video to this song, and needed to have that explained (indirectly) to me. Adds a cool dimension to the vid when it's added (or uncovered ;]). I think I still have a few watches ahead of me before I catch everything in this, but once it starts up it doesn't relent until the end. The frantic pace fits Mulder particularly well. And I love that in addition to serious landmark moments, we also get so many lighter snerk worthy shots that cement the tone of the song so wonderfully. Great vid to close the first half with.

(Played out of order at the beginning of the second half.) I only saw this the one time. I remember it was soft and pretty. Not exactly what I was expecting when I saw a Hellboy vid listed. Pretty colors with the contrast of his red against her blue flame.

Very fun opening credits. A couple of clips of John sitting in the dark or staring at the camera seemed to hang on a hair longer than I expected, but maybe that was just compared to the overall snappy rhythm of the cutting. More great jump cuts. Fun actiony vid. Liked the bit about his hairstyles in particular. ;D
Ragged Ass Road by f1renze
Fabulous job of condensing the first season's storyline. Especially since she makes the show look so damn gorgeous while doing it. And there's the hug! And Michael breaks my heart when he finds that pipe in the way and I hold my breath every time I get to Lincoln in the chair. And wow, what an end shot. No wonder so many people left wanting to watch the show.
I Remember When by keewick
The amount of Angel in the first verse sort of clouds the William to Spike to Chipped!Spike to Souled!Spike flow, but after that, I found it really solid. It's a Spike vid with something new to say, and I adore that. Plus it's cut with great attention and appreciation for his movements, personality, flaws, and humor. She knows Spike incredibly well and that is so so clear. Great character vid and such a ball to watch. Plus the end. Totally deserving of the gasps it got during the show.

It's Wallace's mom! Ok, so sometimes I have inapropriate reactions to stuff. I've never watched any Babylon 5. Very pretty vid. I didn't have the emotional reaction to it that so many people seemed to. I think probably due to the unfamiliarity with the show. I think the spread out focus actually worked against me in this case. I never had time to get attached to these characters that I was meeting for the first time, so their personal tragedies didn't have much impact.
Evening on the Ground by lithium_doll
Very neat effects and cutting in here. Like the knife/pillow scene (one small example)--love the cutting back and forth and blending. Great movement as well, continuing one action from one clip to the next is used to great effect. And Dean...so desperate but so stalwart. Great momentum too, it just keeps pushing to the end.
Be Like Water by butterfly
Very natural rhythm to the cutting, pretty movement and effects. I especially liked the blurs. Again, I don't have any emotional connection to the characters so this one mostly stays superficial to me. But it's a very pretty superficialness. And ironic, because I get the impression it's not superficial at all if you know the source. Not knowing it, the not always easy to understand lyrics and consistent rhythm made it feel just a little long for me.

Comin' Up From Behind by bunniqula
Very sexy vid. Awesome movement. Tilly's character feels so unstoppable. Her actions and progression so inevitable. Feels like a perfect song choice, even without seeing the movie. Most of the people I talked to really enjoyed the sepia tone and grainy noire feel. I was less enthusiastic about the grain. It felt a little heavy to me, or a little too regular and squarish. I kind of wanted to wipe the screen after a while to clear it up. Neat way to influence the tone of the movie. I just have issues all my own with things that feel like they obscure my view too much or for too long.

Loved the narrative arrangement. Very emotional. And she makes fantastic use of the song. I guess Ennis' tragedy feels less sympathetic to me than that of the other characters, but I get a huge sense of loss. And of lives being wasted. Which fits what Cash's voice does to me extremely well.

Love this vid. Love the combination of literal and insane. Fantastic vid for people who haven't seen the show. It's got it's very own narrative and it showcases how pretty the show wonderfully. Very cute vid. I think the first two verses work well, but the final section could have used a little work. Maybe Mickey showing up or just more focus on Jack and Nine together. Some structuring issues, but also some incredibly adorable moments. :)

I really really like how this opens up. It loses me a little during the first chorus. I think it's stronger in general on the verses rather than the choruses. I very much enjoyed most of the verse interpretations. The gun/walking shots on the first two choruses seem to drag a little before finally ending on something more metaphorical. Plus I don't quite know everything that's going on in the end of the vid yet. Though what I've seen of season 3 plus spoilers I know of give me some guesses. ;) Namely lots and lots of angst.

I have to admit the first half was mostly a sea of faces to me, but the second half where the gladiator fight really came in, was where the parallels really started to gel for me and pull out an emotional reaction. Especially with the contrast at the end of one fallen and one given freedom.

Not a song I would have associated with SPN (or Dean in particular), but she does a good job selling it. Nice strong focus on Dean that slowly builds from the beginning. Dean's always been there and he'll always be there. He's the strongest constant their family has, for better or worse.

Very cute intro titles and great opening shot. Great attention to movement that lets the very fast cutting pace work so well. That and great intermixing of strong facial reactions with environmental shots. All packaged around a song that sounds like it was actually written about House, hee. Totally cute, and incredibly easy to love.

Another first vid! And another great first foray. The cutting in the beginning is almost a little too fast for me to fully appreciate, but it does set the mood quickly and effectively. I would have liked to see a little more variety on the black masks at the end after maybe the first two shots which I quite liked, but the vid builds wonderfully and really whips along. Great pace for a Bruce Wayne study.

This is beautiful. It has gorgeous fades that pay wonderful attention to composition. And wow, it hits my Angel show buttons just as well as Two Words does. And yet it does it with such a different mood. It's more bittersweet/doomed than angry as it travels the same space. And I can verify that after a few shots of chocolate vodka, this one will almost make me cry.

Wheee! Lum mentioned that she really paid attention to doing some things that visually match her Buffy EoTW incredibly well. I can't say I picked up on all of those necessarily, but I certainly got "step down"! :D This was so much fun to watch. Both because it made me think of how much fun I have watching Lum's, and because it's an awesome vid on it's own. HP is a fantastic fit for the song, and man, the vid just flies.

Crisp and smooth. I like how it's punctuated visually by the neon colors of motel signs and police lights and fire. It's a not a song I would have originally put with SPN and it's maybe a little long, but it definitely hits my Awwww, Sammy buttons. Especially with the heavy Sam & Dean concentration. The fade of the crows over Jess in white is unfairly pretty. Plus I enjoy the older folk sound that it has for a vid that's about reminiscing (to me). Beautiful mood setting non-character shots especially in the opening verse.

A Day Like Today by laurashapiro
Oh Lee. Oh all of them, actually. Love the mood in this (and the parallels) and wowsa do I love the movement. How sometimes it's all about flowing together and other times it starts spinning and jumping off from one scene to the next in perfect sync with the xylophone/drum beats tinkling and thrumming. It dances around the edge between happy and sad, just like Lee's relationships so often seem to. I love the dynamic between these four characters and this vid does an amazing job of showing how Lee moves between them. Fantastic vid.

Adore this vid. There should be warnings for things with this much kickassness in one place. Then you could have a spotter with a blindfold and ear plugs to turn it off for you after you inevitably lose the ability to stop watching it on repeat.

I adore the subtle black humor in this vid. It's what makes the combination of source and song work so well for me. It's also disturbing by turns (or large swaths ;D) as it should be. Excellent pacing and motion and use of color. The first time I saw it felt a little flat, but having rewatched it a few times now, I'm pretty sure that was largely caused by the washed out colors on the poorer of the two VVC projectors. Love the jump cuts. And how this vid feels so *fun*, even though my brain is back there trying to tell me that reveling in carnage and fucked-upedness is just plain wrong. :P

This is a Sam vid, but it also encompasses a lot of the universe that surrounds him. The demons, the fear, the death, and of course the love. I really enjoy that feeling of place. Of laying out so strongly where he lives, both physically and emotionally. And there are some great added notes of color with the lightning and the blood drop (the continued motion of which I *love*). I'm not sold on all of the blur/glows, but most of those work well for me too. Really like the ones on Sam and John in the middle of the vid. And the car overlay on the sky! So so pretty and effective. The end is also lovely. Fantastic use of environment and object imagery to set and hold onto the mood.

I did like how the vid title itself came in, but it could have been a touch slower too. It's a fun even to someone who doesn't watch SGA. (Me.) I also thought it was a neat idea for the scientist focus. It's been mentioned a few times now, but it would be a good dance vid. Maybe a touch long in a non dance setting. Snappy cutting.

Heartbreaking. I'd seen it a few times before the Premiere's show and never actually gotten physically teary. But something about seeing on the big screen even had my normally dry eyes wibbling by the end. I love how the sense of tragedy is there from the beginning of the vid, but it hangs in the periphery for a while before finally staring you in the face and refusing to let you look away. It sneaks up on you even though you know exactly what's coming. And it's gorgeous. Beautiful use of symbolic imagery aside from the characters themselves.

Also really enjoyed the section focusing on his and Dean's relationship to add that extra weight to his vision of Dean dying. Great jump cuts as well. Great SPN vid for people who aren't familiar with the show. The mood just sucks you right in.

Ok, so I was in the group of people who hadn't ever seen the original video to this song, and needed to have that explained (indirectly) to me. Adds a cool dimension to the vid when it's added (or uncovered ;]). I think I still have a few watches ahead of me before I catch everything in this, but once it starts up it doesn't relent until the end. The frantic pace fits Mulder particularly well. And I love that in addition to serious landmark moments, we also get so many lighter snerk worthy shots that cement the tone of the song so wonderfully. Great vid to close the first half with.

A couple of clips of John sitting in the dark or staring at the camera seemed to hang on a hair longer than I expected, but maybe that was just compared to the overall snappy rhythm of the cutting. Fabulous job of condensing the first season's storyline. Especially since she makes the show look so damn gorgeous while doing it. And there's the hug! And Michael breaks my heart when he finds that pipe in the way and I hold my breath every time I get to Lincoln in the chair. And wow, what an end shot. No wonder so many people left wanting to watch the show.

The amount of Angel in the first verse sort of clouds the William to Spike to Chipped!Spike to Souled!Spike flow, but after that, I found it really solid. It's a Spike vid with something new to say, and I adore that. Plus it's cut with great attention and appreciation for his movements, personality, flaws, and humor. She knows Spike incredibly well and that is so so clear. Great character vid and such a ball to watch. Plus the end. Totally deserving of the gasps it got during the show.

It's Wallace's mom! Ok, so sometimes I have inapropriate reactions to stuff. I've never watched any Babylon 5. Very pretty vid. I didn't have the emotional reaction to it that so many people seemed to. I think probably due to the unfamiliarity with the show. I think the spread out focus actually worked against me in this case. I never had time to get attached to these characters that I was meeting for the first time, so their personal tragedies didn't have much impact.

Very neat effects and cutting in here. Like the knife/pillow scene (one small example)--love the cutting back and forth and blending. Great movement as well, continuing one action from one clip to the next is used to great effect. And Dean...so desperate but so stalwart. Great momentum too, it just keeps pushing to the end.

Very natural rhythm to the cutting, pretty movement and effects. I especially liked the blurs. Again, I don't have any emotional connection to the characters so this one mostly stays superficial to me. But it's a very pretty superficialness. And ironic, because I get the impression it's not superficial at all if you know the source. Not knowing it, the not always easy to understand lyrics and consistent rhythm made it feel just a little long for me.

Very sexy vid. Awesome movement. Tilly's character feels so unstoppable. Her actions and progression so inevitable. Feels like a perfect song choice, even without seeing the movie. Most of the people I talked to really enjoyed the sepia tone and grainy noire feel. I was less enthusiastic about the grain. It felt a little heavy to me, or a little too regular and squarish. I kind of wanted to wipe the screen after a while to clear it up. Neat way to influence the tone of the movie. I just have issues all my own with things that feel like they obscure my view too much or for too long.

Loved the narrative arrangement. Very emotional. And she makes fantastic use of the song. I guess Ennis' tragedy feels less sympathetic to me than that of the other characters, but I get a huge sense of loss. And of lives being wasted. Which fits what Cash's voice does to me extremely well.

I really really like how this opens up. It loses me a little during the first chorus. I think it's stronger in general on the verses rather than the choruses. I very much enjoyed most of the verse interpretations. The gun/walking shots on the first two choruses seem to drag a little before finally ending on something more metaphorical. Plus I don't quite know everything that's going on in the end of the vid yet. Though what I've seen of season 3 plus spoilers I know of give me some guesses. ;) Namely lots and lots of angst.

Great pace for a Bruce Wayne study.

Oh Lee. Oh all of them, actually. Love the mood in this (and the parallels) and wowsa do I love the movement. How sometimes it's all about flowing together and other times it starts spinning and jumping off from one scene to the next in perfect sync with the xylophone/drum beats tinkling and thrumming. It dances around the edge between happy and sad, just like Lee's relationships so often seem to. I love the dynamic between these four characters and this vid does an amazing job of showing how Lee moves between them. Fantastic vid.
