The NYTimes has a map that indicates what percentage of income is spent on gas across the country.

Not surprisingly, the poorest and most rural areas of america spent the highest percentage of their income on gas, while the richest and most urban areas spent the least.

I don't think I need to link to a similar map showing political affiliation do I? Just adjust the colors on that map so "orange" is red, and "purple" is blue.

High gas prices (and, by extension, the republican & bush regime's idiotic and incompetent energy policy) really only hurt the republican base the hardest. While more progressive citizens, who typically favor an intelligent and forward thinking energy policy aren't really the ones getting hurt. Welcome to the modern recurring republican agenda, folks: "Fuck the poor, they don't pay our kickbacks."
