The Update that Time Forgot

Apr 10, 2008 12:27

So yeah. I meant to post something sooner, but I've been lazy and busy.

Last weekend was pretty awesome. karaksindru and kvenkman came up for a book reading/signing by Scott Sigler for his book, Infected and I met them at the Barnes & Noble downtown after work for that. It was actually fairly cool. After that, we went to a pub where Sigler was hanging out for a while and hung out there for a couple hours. The pub was good, although amusingly far from the book store. After that, we were all kinda hungry and looked for a place to eat.

Apparently, there's really nowhere to go to eat after ~11pm in Seattle. I sorta knew this, academically, but that's entirely different than wandering Capitol Hill looking for a place to eat at 11 at night, and finding nothing. Well, okay, not nothing. We ended up at a pizza place, which was actually extremely good.

Saturday the three of sort of chilled around my place most of the day, watched some Torchwood and Who, played some games. Went to dinner at the Six Arms Tavern, also over on Capitol Hill. It was pretty good, I wouldn't mind going there again. Course, sunday kvenkman noted there was a place in the same chain (http://www.mcmenamins.com/) a few blocks from my apartment. I never noticed it before. Will have to check it out at some point.

Saturday night was spent playing some Brawl with the three of us and a friend of karaksindru. Was damn fun, if I do say so myself. Need more brawl!

Sunday, we headed out to Redmond for a Tricky Pixie show, was very good. Picked up a few more Heather Alexander albums. Then we headed back to Auburn, hung out with megalomanicamie and Todd for a while. Sadly, not long, as both karaksindru and I had to work monday, and such.

I was pretty lazy monday and tuesday, and worked from home. I probably should have gone in to work, as we're close to a release and trying to resolve the last remaining bugs. But I think it's good I didn't, I probably would have murdered someone. I still may. I've been massively busy with stupid bugs for our recurring billing feature. Almost all of these bugs are things that would have come up had it actually gone through any kind of good and thorough testing. Or even more than a couple days of vaguely poking at it. But no, it was rushed and pushed out the door months ago, and all the bugs in it are cropping up. Each and everyone some kind of breaking bug that "must be fixed now".

It's been getting very frustrating lately, dealing with the idiocy of some other people. Part of our product, a management system built in flex, interacts with the back end code/database using various web methods. Some of the changes I made to fix a couple web methods changed the structure of the xml output, which broke the flex app. So, the developer in Canada working on this part of the app tells me "It's not working, can you fix it?". What the fuck? I mean, all I can say is that "it's working for me, you're either an idiot, or you need to be more specific" (okay, I said it more politely).

But alas, apparently this developer somehow manages to work on the flex code without having ANY FUCKING CLUE what the structure of the XML it expects is. All he seems to know is that it "doesn't work". Well fuck you. If you can't actually tell me WHY it doesn't work, and WHAT is different that's causing it to not work, then I CAN'T and WON'T help you. It makes me wonder if he's just programming by banging two cpu's together. Ugh.

Of course, the project manager is no help. All I get from him is "well, what can you do to make it work as soon as possible, so we can release this." It's never "well, its better to do it right and take a little extra time to get it right", always "we need to release this now, so do whatever to get it working." Fuck you, asshole, I will not. I've compromised my integrity as a developer for their precious "release schedule" far too much already. And I've seriously had it with writing shitty hacks and terrible code just to get products and features out the door according to their idiotic and arbitrary time lines.

I've gotten frustrated enough that I've begun swearing and making insulting and degrading remarks into comments and subversion commit messages. I think that's a good sign I need a vacation, or a new job, or both.

In a related manner, I've found myself being more irritable lately, and jumping on people for more trivial/trifling things than normal. I mean, I'm normally somewhat intolerant of idiocy/stupidity in others, but for the sake of not being a complete jackass, I try to let minor things slide most of the time. Lately, though, it seems like every little thing irks me and makes me want to slap someone.

I really think I just need some good time off of.. well.. everything.
