ASSEMBLE.

[last time I posted here, it was the Avengers trailer. Two months ago. Somehow this feels eerily appropriate now.]

The Avengers opened here a week ago, thanks to it being the 4-day Labor Day holiday [say that 3 times fast], so it turns out I've watched it 4 times already. The excuse was so I could watch it in 2D, regular 3D, IMAX 3D and stuff, but ( Read more... )

I'm just going to throw this in here (and weep that several Avengers are missing from this photo but aaaaaahhhh it's all I have on hand right now):

while we're at it, can we talk about the various combinations and pairings and little things here and there that this movie had? Because it was FANTASTIC. Something for everyone! (I am still hearts for eyes over Tony and Bruce being science buddies. SCIENCE! ]o/)

RIDONCULOUS PICTURES ARE MY FAAAAVORITES.

Also, YES to the science buddies! I just hearted it SO HARD that Tony and Bruce went away together in the end to probably invent time travel or something. :)

That was probably my favorite thing about the movie!

Well, first, Renner's arms, and second, the abundance of chemistry within the fabulous five.

(I am still hearts for eyes over Tony and Bruce being science buddies. SCIENCE! ]o/)

Yes! I didn't see that coming (why didn't I?) but I loved that they could talk nerdy to each other.

Well, first, Renner's arms

In the immortal words of Buffy Summers? He's- have you seen his arms? Those are good arms to have.

:)

**laughs** Yes. There's a Buffy quote for everything.

And as they say on Tumblr:

(Also, let's ignore the part where I can't properly add up the number of members of the Avengers. *face-palm*)

HOW SO PRETTY, JRENNER. I just... he doesn't even have that much to do in the movie in the whacky scienc-y flashy things Tony and Bruce and Loki and even Natasha have to do... and yet, whenever he's on screen I CANNOT SEE ANYONE ELSE, that's how freaking awesome he is.

[Hee. It's a "whole bunch of superheroes", and that's a real number and everything. *g*]

oh god his arms. They were ....yeah. Fantastic. *_*

I really loved that they amped up Bruce's scientific background! IDK it feels like in the other films it's mostly guilt and shame and tiiiny bit of SCIENCE so for him to show how capable he is (and Tony KNOWS this, never tiptoeing around him like the others do)... it was wonderful. aaaahhh. perfect.

OMG STEF, YES. Okay, let's talk about Bruce here for a minute because SERIOUSLY. I feel like only Joss could make this so freaking perfect. First they go there and want Bruce FOR SCIENCE and Mark Ruffalo *nails* it hardcore, and that scene Tony and Bruce are talking about how "it's a terrible privilege" I wanna hug them both so hard AND NEVER LET GO that fucking scene is one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen. And I love it that the potential of Hulkness is scarier than the actual Hulk [and I really really love it that most fearless person on the world ever Natasha Romanoff is scared shitless of the Hulk.]

AND. THEN. JOSS. MADE. THE. HULK. FUNNY. As in FUCKING FINALLY, COME ON, PEOPLES, IT'S A GIANT GREEN ANGRY MONSTER, IF HE'S NOT FUNNY THEN HE'S BORING AS FUCK. Making him the comic relief in the big battle scene was a strike of genius: it distracts us film people from the obvious FX-ness, and it hooks the audience into instantly liking the Hulk *because* it's funny.

God, I need to watch this again.

YESSSS. So like... I used to LOVE the original Hulk movie (though I acknowledge and know it's terrible now!) and when I rewatched it the other night I just got so pissed at all the potential coolness that was wasted. The second one was better but man, making him this like wounded, scared creature all the time is annoying as fuck. He's a SCIENTIST. He knows this shit, and for him and Tony to be all bro-y about it was glorious, I agree!

I wanna hug them both so hard AND NEVER LET GO that fucking scene is one of the most brilliant things I've ever seen.

YES, THIS. They both have things they can't control (the arc reactor & hulkness) but it's a survival mechanism, and aahhh Tony's own id and anger got the best of him in IM2, so when he sees Bruce has a handle on it, he trusts him (enough to not walk on eggshells while everyone keeps their distance -- even Natasha like you said! OH MAN. That was fucking scary and awesome).

AND. THEN. JOSS. MADE. THE. HULK. FUNNY. As in FUCKING FINALLY, COME ON, PEOPLES, IT'S A GIANT GREEN ANGRY MONSTER, IF HE'S NOT FUNNY THEN HE'S BORING AS FUCK.

YES, MAKE HIM FUNNY. He's still saving people, he's helping out Tony who's shown him the potential (who INVITES HIM TO THE R&D TO PLAY WITH HIS TOYS KJSLDFDLSDA) in being the Hulk, fucking HAVE FUN WITH IT.

Plus, watching Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and loving how snarky the Hulk is in that just... I WANTED THAT. And then WE GOT IT. *_* GLORIOUS.

aahhh I'm already planning to see it at least twice more this week, holy crap. \o/

I'm just nodding along here -- the other movies did spend way too much time in scientist!Bruce only researching stuff completely tied to the Hulk... this time around NO ONE [but Tony] even wants to say the Hulk's name, and that is such a simple idea, and yet made the character a lot more interesting and engaging.

And YES, Tony & Bruce science buddies FOREVER. Actually, it surprised me that Tony is pretty mature in the movie, all things considered. You're right, he doesn't walk in eggshells around Bruce and that helps Bruce realize he can turn the Hulk into an asset... and then there's that little line when Tony tells Cap to call the action in the battle scene, and I actually clapped, because Tony knows nothing about the soldiering life or giving orders in a war zone, and, you know, here's the perfect soldier who CAN do it... so Tony makes him do it. How far have you come, bb.

I need to watch Earth's Mightiest Heroes, don't I? I've been stuck in DC-only limbo for the past two years, it might be time to go back to my Marvel roots. :)

Exactly! It was great, and added a whole other level of awesomeness to Tony. :D

yes! It was so weird to see Cap calling the shots -- like obviously he has the most experience but I'd just think with Tony, it'd default back to him as leader. To have Cap do it, since he does have the experience, and Tony to take a step back for the good of the team = love.

You should! I basically know very little about Marvel (I was very "um, yay?" about the post-credits scene before I looked the dude up and then remembered, hah.) but that series is funny and cute. Reminds me of Justice League Unlimited. There's also the new Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. It's a little more fourth wall and ridiculous than A:EMH but it's fun (and has occasional Avengers cameos PLUS Fury + Coulson!)

That reminds me -- you watch the Young Justice cartoon, right? I think I need to finally watch it myself! oh DC, it's been a while, but I really should.

I like how the movie is chock-full of little parallels -- there's the big obvious one with Steve telling Tony he'll never sacrifice himself for the greater good, which sets up the missile scene, but then -- Tony has a hard time sharing his name on a lease with Pepper, but he figures out eventually that the team will only work if he learns to share, and delegate.

I saw a couple of random A:EMH episodes on TV and yeah, I got the same JLU goofy-with-plot vibe from it. I'll probably end up watching it, thanks! As for YJ: the first season is -- and I hate this word hard, but it's the one that fits -- FLAWLESS. Second season is YJ: Invasion, and the new version is only up to second episode... I'm still not sure I like it, but I'll keep watching for the time being.

You know, I hadn't nailed it specifically but I think that's a huge part of why this Bruce Banner finally felt right.

and Tony KNOWS this, never tiptoeing around him like the others do)... it was wonderful. aaaahhh. perfect.

Agreed! I was afraid the writers were going to go the route of having Tony be threatened by not being the smartest guy in the room (or, maybe by still being the smartest guy in the room, but having someone else in the room who could actually keep up) so I loved that they instead hit it right off.

I think this pairing may have traction; my friend reported that, at his screening, two girls behind him erupted in squee at Bruce and Tony sharing a ride off into the proverbial sunset. He was all "I know what they were thinking because I saw the same thing!" (I have taught him well.)

Yes! It's funny, I queued up the original Bill Bixby series on Netflix (I'd watched some of it before years ago when the first Hulk film came out) but what was weird was seeing him plan experiments and work on projects and I kept feeling this odd "why does this feel strange?" thing... BECAUSE HE'S A SCIENTIST. And he's introverted! But he has a sense of humor! So it was great to see that here.

Right, I loved them on equal footing! It was cute to see Tony and Steve trying to talk science ("English!") but for Tony to match wits with Bruce was lovely.

Hee! I kind of hope they have a Bruce cameo in Iron Man 3 (I doubt it since they'll be filming so soon) but since RDJ and Mark seem to campaigning for more science bro time, I'm all for it! :D
