Caprica
Uh, NO.
That was pretty disappointing [boring? yeah, boring too. I slept halfway through it last night, and had to watch the rest today. And I usually don't sleep until I'm done watching anything]. I must confess that --
a) I'm still pissed at the BSG finale [more than I thought, even. Pretending the last 30 minutes never happened is still not working and all I'm left is with EVERYONE FUCKING LEFT LEE ALL ALONE AND HE HAD NO CHOICE IN THE MATTER AND I HATE THAT!!! HE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE LEADER OF A NEW PRETTY SHINY WORLD WHERE HUMANS AND CYLONS WERE BFFS AND INSTEAD I GOT "I wanna climb mountains" WTF??? ALSO: GO FUCK YOURSELF WITH YOUR STUPID ANGELS, RDM. GYAH.]
b) Eric Stoltz SCARES THE CRAP OUT OF ME he looks like a psycho killer all the time *shudders*
-- but I figured I could put all that behind and watch Caprica, because I do love origin stories, and because I somehow had deluded myself into thinking this would be RDM does scifi!West-Wing. [Yeah, I know. Delusional!Tissa makes random appearances out of nowhere and really, 95% of the time she's right. But she'll be right punished for this one.] Instead we got RDM does scifi!Days-of-Our-Lives.
And sure, I was expecting something soap-opera-ish -- they all but advertised this as Two Rival Families Enter; Only One Can Win shenanigans -- but what I got was SO EXTREMELY soap-opera-ish at times I thought I was watching the
stupid 8pm telenovela on fucking Globo. And if that's not a clear reference to you, that was the VERY OPPOSITE of a compliment -- in my book, that's the worst thing I can compare another work of fiction to.
It's not that I hated everything:
- I liked this beautiful incredibly evolved and yet massively racist Caprica;
- I liked that the monotheist religion movement is bubbling underground [though the terrorism thing was very heavy-handed cliché, yes, RDM, you're drawing parallels to real life we're not as stupid as you think we are] and that Sister Clarice is apparently one of the leaders [also, you know, Polly Walker >>> everyone else];
- I loved Esai Morales as Joseph and his relationship with little William [omg wee Bill Adama so cute!] and the fact that HE IS SO FRAKKED IN LIFE I. CAN'T. EVEN [relatedly, I loved that he threatened CancerMan because I have this loooooong grudge against William B. Davis from the time he wrote THE STUPIDEST X-FILES EPISODE EVER and every time he dies on TV I CHEER OH YES THERE].
- The music is omfg so pretty and melancholic and sometimes you could hear Passacaglia-but-not-really oh, Bear McCreary, marry me!
But maybe it's just that I've got T:TSCC in the head and I've been thinking a lot about artificial intelligence in all matter of sci-fi and what mostly pissed me off about Caprica is that the first Cylon wasn't so much "created by men" [TM BSG credits] -- which suggested an evolved AI -- as it was the transferred conscience of AN EXTREMELY ANNOYING TEENAGE GIRL WHO'S DEFYING MOMMY AND DADDY FOR NO APPARENT REASON.
And of course she's ~*/A GENIUS\*~ omfg how many times did they mention that?! So really, this is what happened: special ~tortured~ emo poor little rich girl developed the most advanced technology of her time but tragically died before she could do anything about it. And now Daddy wants her back so much he's willing to kill [well, have someone else kill] for it but OH NOES it doesn't work as he wished but he still managed to make killer!Cylons work because SERIOUS GOVERNMENT BUSINESS needs to be racist towards Taurons but psych! emo annoying girl is still there in the end DUN DUN DUN.
WHAT?
Again: NO.
And because she believed in a monotheistic religion then the Cylons are all monotheist? Here I was expecting some depth like an artificial intelligence which debunked polytheism by using logic/science/facts/whatever -- or even something petty as the Cylons becoming monotheist just to oppose humans [I kinda thought that from BSG]. Instead we get EMO!GIRL?! OH EAT MY FIST, RDM.
So there. I'm probably gonna watch the series when it starts because again, delusional!Tissa likes the idea of eating her words re: this pilot and who knows, maybe the series will be sci-fi!West-Wing and the politics/socio-economic-religious-cultural tones will surpass the annoying emo!girl-Cylon OF DOOM?
Yeah, delusional!Tissa is the only one who believes that, really.
