Sorry for not updating yesterday... I was asleep. :-)
Anyways.
October 31st, 2003 - Tim Fest at the Modern Art Museum in Rio - Main Stage
There was a five band line up, scheduled to start at 6pm.
Whirlwind Heat.
Fellini (a Brazilian band).
Super Furry Animals.
The Rapture.
The White Stripes.
None of us (André, Marcele, my sister Marina and I) were really interested in any of the first 4 bands. We were going to see the Stripes. *g* Hence, we only got there at 8pm, when the first 2 band had already played. All four of us were wearing white and red, as were a lot of people.
Speaking of people. The. prettiest. people. I've. ever. seen. in. my. life. Really. Everybody was beautiful. And wore really cool clothes. And had great hair. Marina and I counted about 20 boys we'd marry in a second. :-P
We saw a pretty boy in a Teenage Fanclub T-Shirt. Hypothetical pick up lines:
- Do you have a personality crisis?
- Would you like to go on a alcoholiday?
*g*
Anywho.
We got there when Super Furry Animals was on the stage. They had just started their performance. The place was not packed yet, so we made our way through the crowd fairly easy and got a great place to watch a band none of us actually liked. The thing about indie music/alt. rock is that even when the band sucks, it's better than half the shit out there. So it was an okay concert. They played 'Juxtaposed with U', the one song of them I know. Marcele and I danced a lot. They came back for the encore dressed in cavemen/Chubbaca outfits, holding the Football World Cup. Hee. The English can't really grasp the fact that we've won FIVE of those, huh? Sorry, dearies, I know you invented the sport... but this is The Football Country. *g*
A short interval and next came The Rapture. We tried to get even closer to the stage while they were setting up the stage. The show was good. I had never heard any of their songs, so I had no expectations. My sister had said they were noisy like The Hives, which I don't like very much. They are indeed noisy, but way better than The Hives. The lead singer's voice is amazing, his got an incredible high range (and he's cute :D), so it was actually a very nice experience. I even wanna download a couple of songs to see if they're as powerful in studio as they're live.
The Rapture's concert over, another interval. Longer this time. Everybody got a wee anxious. Marina and I were actually bouncing. We got even closer to the stage. I made some small talk with an american guy André pointed my way ("She speaks English!"). We watched the roadies set up Meg's drums. I love the Stripes stage set up, with Meg's drums up front and Jack's 2 mics, one center stage and the other right beside the drums.
(Aside: Coolest roadies ever. Dressed up in full black suits and cowboy hats. They looked wicked cool. But I felt a bit sorry for them, as this is Rio, and it was an incredibly hot night)
Finally, there came Jack and Meg.
The audience went insane.
Here are some pictures of the Stripes on stage. The setlist, as best as I can remember it:
- Black Math. Whoa. As I told Marcele after the concert, Jack and Meg can make more noise than any 5-member band out there. Amazing start!
- Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground. The crowd sings it along with Jack. It's obvious he's surprised by it. Meg smiles all the way through the song.
- I Think I Smell A Rat. Again, the crowd sings along. And claps along. And dances along.
- Jolene. At this point, Jack says "Hi Brazil, I'm Jack White and this is my big sister Meg White" and I don't remember anything else he said because everybody was screaming with glee. :D
- You're Pretty Good Looking (For A Girl). Yay! I really wanted to hear it live, so that was incredibly cool.
- Death Letter/Little Bird.
- Hotel Yorba. Once again, everybody was singing it along with Jack. I adore this song, it's my favorite Stripes song, so it was just perfect that they played it here.
- In The Cold, Cold Night. Meg is the most shy person I've ever seen. She got up from the drums, went to the main mic and just sang it. The lights were all on both on the stage and on the audience, so she could see everybody singing along with her. She was blushing all the way to the end of the song. So cute!
- Cannon/John the Revelator.
- We're Going To Be Friends. Jack smiled all the way through it, as the crowd sang along with him. Again, all lights on, you could feel the euphoria in everybody.
- I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself. Marina and I were wondering if this one would make the setlist minutes before the concert, so it's nice that they played it :)
- Ball And Biscuit. Freaking best part of the concert. This song is something else! I've never heard anything so *powerful* live!
- Fell In Love With A Girl. They did a slow paced version of it, it was pretty nice.
- Let's Shake Hands.
- The Hardest Button To Button. The audience went berserk over this one.
Encore:
- Screwdriver. Weeeeeee! I got to scream a lot along with Jack :-)
- Seven Nation Army. They finished with their current big hit here, once again with the whole audience singing along.
It's incredible how you can't take your eyes off of Jack. He's got such a poweful presence, all you can do is watch him and be amazed.
And Meg is just so cute. I love it that she goes crazy on the drums and her face is always serene, singing along with Jack with a small smile on her lips.
And OH MY GOD, Jack's pants are soooo HOT.
Marina and I were talking after the show. Jack is the weirdest guy. He's also the whitest (no pun intended) person I've ever seen (tropical country here, 90% of the population has some % of African heritage). His hair is longer than usual and it was covering his face for most of the time. Yet, he smiles and we melt. He hits a high note and there comes the collective puddle of goo.
evemac and
muzakgurrl are absolutely right: Jack is SEX.
