In other news, I just got back from watching Iron Man for a freaking fourth time and now I'm pretty sure I'm done with it at least until a DVD screener copy comes out because I'm starting to quote dialog before it happens and that's just annoying.
*g*
Anyway.
dafnap linked to Jeff Bridges'
backstage picture album yesterday and, besides the pretty PRETTY pictures, he says something about how making this movie was like being part of a multi-million dollar student film and OH MAN. That is exactly why I love it so much. I mean, I can't remember the last time I saw so much camera experimentation on a big Hollywood blockbuster.
You guys keep comparing IM to Batman Begins and for me there's just no comparison -- BB turns mediocre on re-watch: the dialog is trite, Katie Holmes is a mistake, Liam Neeson's character is a complete joke and absolutely nothing unexpected happens, you can foresee the ending a mile away. [Disclaimer: Christian Bale is perfect, though. Especially considering the material he had to work with.]
OTOH, Iron Man keeps getting better on re-watch. [Even when you can nitpick the Air Force stuff to hell and back, why thank you, Stargate, for filling my head with useless military knowledge. *g*] There are TONS of dialog subtleties and acting choices [RDJ does some stuff with his face and eyes that you don't usually see in big movies. Little flinches and winces and plain staring that is just a joy to watch] that you skip on first watch that come back to bite you in the ass and I just love that. Also, you really can see that every scene, every line was studied and prepared to death.
I really hope we get a Director's Cut DVD release, because I have a feeling that a whole lot of character build-up was left on the cutting room floor to make for an action-packed Summer release. Fingers crossed.
